Huge Refinery Fire in Kansas City

My fire department is battling a huge storage tank fire at the Magellan Pipe Line Co. in the Fairfax district in Kansas City, Kansas. This facility is just south of the GM Fairfax Plant. The storage tank was struck by lightning.

This storage tank holds 58,000 barrels of unleaded gasoline or 2.4 million gallons. We are in a defensive mode right now trying to cool down the surrounding tanks with master streams from the pumpers' deck guns and from aerials (hook and ladder trucks). There goes the price of fuel again!

I am off duty right now, but will probably get called in to relieve the crews down there battling the blaze.

    Great.
    Thats alll we need.

Its the lack of refinery capability that is killing us now. We lost some during Katrina, we lost a huge one a few months ago that mysteriously blew up and now this.

Be careful. It aint worth dying over.

Be careful out there. Gas prices do suck, but I would rather pay a little more than have one of you guys get hurt.

This refinery is connected to 8500 miles of pipeline in the United States and to other refinery facilities as storage for the Magellan Pipe Line Company.

Unfortunately this will probably cause the price of gasoline to go even higher!

The surrounding tanks contain diesel fuel and jet fuel, hopefully we can contain the fire to the single storage tank.

You bet falcon1! No one called in from off duty yet, but the night is still young.

Thank you goldshellback, the fire has been contained to the single tank and that tank has collapsed inward as it was designed to do. There have been no injuries, thank God! The tank was not at full capacity as there was ONLY 1.2 million gallons of unleaded gasoline on fire. The fire is still burning as of this morning and creating a huge smoke plume which is being monitored by the EPA for air quality control.

The refining capacity in our country is severely limited as it is now and this certainly will not help matters any. Fuel is causing everything in life to steadily climb in price. Not only do we need to drill for more oil, but even more critical perhaps, is the need for new refinery facilities. Hydrogen cars are still aways from being on the market, and electric vehicles are limited by their driving range, although that is improving as new battery technology is becoming available.

Remember all of this when you step into the voting booth this fall.

And just who should we vote for if we consider this to be important? McCain and Obama are on the same page with 'Global Warming'. Neither has a coherent plan on how to deal with rising energy needs, neither wants to drill in ANWAR or off the US coast.

Sorry, I'm a bit touchy on the issue of next fall's election.

I'm in Kansas City, and have been watching the column of smoke rising all day. Thanks to those who have contained the blaze... stay safe.

You're right, both are on the same page. We really don't have a good choice this time. Thanks for the gratitude though, it really is appreciated, both of you.

Like everyone said the important thing is no firemen get injured or killed fighting the fire,as far as 1.2 million gallons of fuel we go through more than that every hour of every day in this country,if the refinery gets shut down that would hurt tho
