Convicted felon accidentally shoots himself while twirling gun like a 'cowboy'

    June 12, 2008

A Tallahassee man who shot himself in the abdomen Wednesday night while playing with a gun ended up getting arrested on a charge of possession of a gun by a convicted felon,.

“He was playing with a .22-caliber revolver, spinning it like the cowboys do, when it went off,” said Officer David McCranie, spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department.

Wallace Harris, 53, was rushed to the hospital for his injury, McCranie said. The gunshot wound required surgery but wasn't life-threatening.

It happened about 6:45 p.m. in the 200 block of Tropicare Street.

Police later discovered that Harris is a convicted felon and that he has an extensive criminal history in Leon County dating back to 1989. Several charges were for weapons offenses.

“Thank goodness no one else is injured,” McCranie said. “It could have been a very serious situation.”

Can't be true. It's against the law for felons to have firearms...

This can't be true, felons can't own guns so how could he possibly shoot himself when the law forbids him having the very instrument he would need.I guess it goes to show laws don't keeo guns out of criminals hands and with an extensive rap sheet this guy shoulda been dropped off on devil's island somewhere to eek out an existence or not

What is missed on this situation is how this plays into the hands of those wanting to further restrict, limit, govermentize access to weapons. This is not an isolated case...but yet another example of how easily it is for a felon to get access to weapons...that made the news.

Thats what you call a good shot !!!!!! If it had been a head shot that would have been counted as an expert shot.

Seems to me he was twirling it like someone wanting to get shot, much as he wanted to have that cowboy look. Well, look at him now. Cowboy up, Beavis.

Hm. I wonder if a spinning revolver has the same balance without its live rounds. Hm. Something for our test dummy to try out, once he gets released.

Unfortunately, this idiot never learned about SHOT PLACEMENT.
The situation will NEVER BE THE WAY YOU WANT, it WILL BE THE WAY IT IS. You must be FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ADAPT and just "DEAL WITH IT".

I guess shot placement was covered in the same class when they talked about cowboy revolvers being single action only weapons...
