Yes, I would say there's a ballast adjustment called for.

No adjustment necessary, that baby is cornering on a dime. A dime about the size of lake Michigan.

I wonder what happened to all the airplanes they usually have on deck ;-) Let's hope they remembered to store them safely.

I had this visual of them all piled on one side of the ship in the hold.

I wonder who's got the top bunks?

In the Coast Guard...we COULD turn our row boats on a dime......no problem!

The pic is from the sea trial of the USS Ronald Reagan. Part of the sea trial requires that the ship turn sharply to check full rudder function. It also has to do other maneuvers like reverse at full speed for many many miles.

At the time the pic was taken, there was no aircraft or other machinery on board. Only a skeleton crew was operating the ship.

I thought the crew saw a topless girl on a boat on the port side at first

I remember being on the USS Saipan (LHA-2) and experiencing turns similar, though not so extreme. We could always tell from below-decks if the ship was turning because of the list to one side.

High speed turns for sea-trial...I loved 'em...

And like Rob said, no planes, and it's one of the few times that an Aircraft Carrier is actually 'stowed for sea.'

That said, if you had audio to go with that picture, you would still hear a lot of computer monitors and other stuff hitting the deck.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.

We call it a ballast control party. On a submarine it really 'jacks' with the Diving Officer, on that thing (read: target) I doubt even a full crew could alter how it 'rides' in the water. She's HUGE!
