I would say that leaving doors/windows open depends very much on where you live and what lifestyle you have.

I live in the country. I have dogs. BIG dogs and more than one. I have a fully fenced/gated (locked) yard with clear signs about the dogs on the fence. My neighborhood knows that vicious dogs live at my place. (the mailman even has a "vicious dogs" card on file at the P.O. as a warning to other mail people.) I also carry openly at all times when awake and there is usually someone home at all times (I work at home).

I have no problems leaving all my doors and several windows open. They are usually open all day long and most of the evening until about 10 p.m.

I would not be so confident if I lived in a condo/apt in the inner city. I would not be so confident if I were a single woman living in a metro area. I would not be so confident if I didn't have the dogs/etc. and looked affluent. However, I am in none of those situations so I have no issues with my home security even though I am in a high risk business (criminal/juvenile/dependency law).

I like to leave the windows open, the dogs need a little fun every now and then.

    +1. Same here.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.
