TC, I'm sure you're a reasonable fellow in lots of ways. But PETA's extremist views are antithetical to me and lots of others. Their self-described "no-compromise" positions don't lend much room for rational discussion, nor do the outrageous tactics of many in the organization.

I do not ascribe to the school of thought that animals have just as many rights as humans. I'm opposed to needless cruelty, but I'm not going to become a vegan. I'm opposed to the way some people hunt, but not hunting. I like well-run zoos, and think they're important. I favor neuter/release programs for feral cats. The list goes on.

I don't see that there's much wrong with shooting a few pigeons. I do think it would be a good thing to collect their carcasses to feed the hungry. Maybe a charitable organization could take on that project?
    Cheers,

If you would like to know a litle more about PETA, search..."Peta Kills Animals"...it's a lot worse than a few pigeons...OMO

I'm not trying to make light of the killing of ANY animals (I don't even hunt any more...), but I do not worry about the aforementioned pigeons.

    Respectfully, of course!

In fact, it is the attitudes like those displayed by many of you in this thread and others like it that help alienate others who might not share your beliefs. Others that might get behind the right to carry in National Parks, or even just period, but are put-off by the "lets kill the animals and all those that would defend their rights" attitude. One person recently asked how they might go about increasing CCW permitholders. I'm sure one such way would be to not paint all gun owners out to lack respect for life. I don't know, maybe hunting or killing animals that you find to be a nuisance is acceptable to you, but to millions of people like me it is not.

It doesn't surprise me that so many oppose the legal carry in National Parks when people here on DC champion the shooting of animals that pose a minor nuisance. Not one bit, and topics like this don't help the cause.

generally people who do not share beliefs do not congregate on the same forum... I know I do not hang on PETA or Brady or Obama forums - as we do not share common beliefs or core values.

I have not seen any posts to the effect of killing all of the animals nor "killing all those that would defend their rights" - that would be a violation of the TOS as it would be proposing that someone commit a crime...

Generalities create statistical issues that often become very difficult to prove and later destroys the credibility of the one using them.

maybe it is acceptable, depends upon a lot of factors - personally I can't wait for deer season...

So, what would help the cause? Good ideas are always welcome.

Last I checked hunting and other shooting sports were not necessarily that closely related a topic to Defensive Carry hence the OP placed this news release in an off-topic part of the forum.

What I don't get is that they were okay with killing the pigeons with hawks, but if you bring guns into it then all of the sudden you're a bad person. Death by shotgun is much faster and more merciful then death by hawk so I don't see a single problem.

Killing nuisance animals? Absolutely... We are not talking about killing pets. PETA and ELF are both extreme organizations that commit crimes against people on a regular basis.

Do you know how many pigeons there are? There is no season or bag limit in Texas, they are considered Rock doves or feral pigeons.

Because they have adapted to civilization they do not have many effective natural predators. There are several hazards to people created by these nuisance animals.

I am sure there are none on this forum that would encourage the eradication of a species or the shooting of any protected animal.

I had to look up rapacious! +1 for the word.

Did PETA have a problem with the hawks? I certainly hope they don't watch the National Geographic channel. They would have lawsuits against all species of animals. The horror!

I don't think I would shed a tear if I stepped on the last Labidura herculeana (St Helena earwig,) on the endangered species list.

It is acceptable to me, and to millions of people like me.

I'd be willing to bet that if the numbers of people like me, were compared to the numbers of people like you...

    you would be severely "outgunned".

    A little known secret...
pigeons taste great...if you slip them in with dove breasts, they look like a fat dove and taste the same.
    another secret..
the nuclear plant where I work spent over 40,000 dollars on pigeon control last year alone. Pigeon droppings are very corrosive, not to mention a health hazard. We had had electrical failures because of accumulations of droppings and the acid in them corroding everything that they get dumped on.

I also find it somewhat amusing that some people refuse to understand something as simple as killing pigeons and referring to it as "murder".
But hey...we all need a good smirk and and a laugh occasionally.

I'll never forget the day a banker in Salina Ks. walked out of the bank and a pigeon defecated on his suit, the banker spent $30,000 of his own money hiring a guy to trap pigeons downtown and take them out in the country to let them go,we still had pigeons downtown and lots of them,I think they just got smarter

If I was trapping them I sure would'nt waste them by letting them go.

With all that time I had in catching them, the least I could do is get a decent lunch out of the them for the effort.

Some members of PETA about a year or two ago were found guilty of slaughtering dogs and cats out behind dumpsters in NC.

Not saying they are all like that, or that it was an offical directive though.

In the city they are pigeons, but in the country rock doves, and yes they do taste good.
Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

On the other side of the pond, it was probably death by pellet gun, a Theoben Rapid or some such.

They don't take kindly to folks having real guns over there.
