    Pigeons shot PETA pithed

Wimbledon under fire for pigeon cull
    Jun 24, 1:03 pm EDT

Buzz Up PrintLONDON, June 24 (Reuters) - Wimbledon came under fire from animal activists on Tuesday for using marksmen to shoot down dive-bombing pigeons.

The tournament employs two hawks to scare away pigeons who had become a pest swooping down on Centre Court and distracting players in the middle of tense matches.

But the hawks failed to keep the pigeons away from the players’ lawn and the open-air media restaurant so marksmen were called in.

“The hawks are our first line of deterrent, and by and large they do the job,” Wimbledon spokesman Johnny Perkins said.

“But unfortunately there were one or two areas where the hawks didn’t deter the pigeons, so it was deemed necessary to take a harder approach,” he explained.

The marksmen were summoned by Wimbledon as pigeon droppings on the restaurant tables were thought to be a health hazard.

The decision to call in the marksmen was condemned as “cruel and illegal behaviour” by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which complained to the tournament organisers and the police.

“Since the use of marksmen to kill pigeons appears to have been carried out as a first, rather than a last resort, and not out of a concern for public health, but rather because the animals were deemed inconvenient by players, you appear to be in clear violation of the law,” PETA vice-president Bruce Friedrich said.

I wonder if Bruce would feel better if he were told that they just liked shootin' pigeons.........?!

The pigeons in London are unlike anything I've ever seen before. In common outside areas where the masses hang out and eat lunch, the pigeons are ruthless. (if a pigeon could be deemed as such...)

Do a search on Wikipedia for "flying rat" and you are directed to this page. Hmmmm. Sounds like squab for dinner.

I don't see how this topic applies to this forum, and in fact I agree with PETA... Is this an anti-animal forum or a concealed carry forum?

Pigeons are the rats of the bird world.

They are totally unnatural in their huge numbers anyway since they need to be parasitic to human kind in order to survive in such massive numbers.

Actually human beings created the pigeon problem which does not alter the fact that their dropping are now a health hazard and a serious concern in close proximity around humans and human food.

OT Humor & Discussion sub-forum, actually. PETA is virulently anti-RKBA, anti-capitalist, pro-socialist; while I might agree with their general sentiment, the reasoning behind it is rapacious and malevolent.

If one felt guilty about swatting flies, I could agree, as pigeons are only slightly less numerous than flies.

    Let's keep things in perspective:

    Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
    By Tom Lehrer
On YouTube: YouTube - Tom Lehrer - Poisoning pigeons in the park

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you? 'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
    On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
    Every Sunday you'll see
    My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
    The sun's shining bright,
    Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

    We've gained notoriety,
    And caused much anxiety
    In the Audubon Society
    With our games.
    They call it impiety
    And lack of propriety,
    And quite a variety
    Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

    So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
    And maybe we'll do
    In a squirrel* or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
    My pulse will be quickenin'
    With each drop of strych'nine
    We feed to a pigeon.
    (It just takes a smidgin!)
To poison a pigeon in the park.
    Cheers,
    Rod

Actually, flies are quite usefull. Them and wasps make great targets for my children to shoot at with their airsoft guns. Kids are more efficient than a flyswatter, because the pests never see it coming and can't fly away in time.

    Hey,
Where did they get guns in England?

    You guys dissapoint me.

In fact, it is the attitudes like those displayed by many of you in this thread and others like it that help alienate others who might not share your beliefs. Others that might get behind the right to carry in National Parks, or even just period, but are put-off by the "lets kill the animals and all those that would defend their rights" attitude. One person recently asked how they might go about increasing CCW permitholders. I'm sure one such way would be to not paint all gun owners out to lack respect for life. I don't know, maybe hunting or killing animals that you find to be a nuisance is acceptable to you, but to millions of people like me it is not.

It doesn't surprise me that so many oppose the legal carry in National Parks when people here on DC champion the shooting of animals that pose a minor nuisance. Not one bit, and topics like this don't help the cause.
