Apparently I’m too sensitive on gun rights issues

On another (non-gun) forum I frequent, somebody posted the following lyrics from a Weird Al Yankovic song. My reply was to label it “a load of crap”. Everybody jumped me on as being way too sensitive, and not being able to take a joke. I tried to explain to them that no matter what Weird Al’s motive for writing the song, it perpetrates stereotypes that I am continually fighting against. It’s not like I got mad at the person that posted it. I just labeled it a “load of crap”. Tell me if I was being “too sensitive”.

Yeah, I gotta be ready if the Commies attack us tonight
I'll blow their brains out with my Smith and Wesson
That ought to teach them all a darn good lesson

It was just a lousy flesh wound, Dad
You know, I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Oh, I still haven't figured out the safety on my rifle yet
Little Fluffy took a round, better take him to the vet
I filled that kitty cat so full of lead

Come on and grab your ammo
What have you got to lose?
    We'll all get liquored up
And shoot at anything that moves

Got a brand new semi-automatic weapon with a laser sight
Oh, I'm prayin' somebody tries to break in here tonight
I always keep a Magnum in my trunk
You better ask yourself, do you feel lucky, punk?
Because I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Angry I agree with you 100%

Total fabricated lies presented in a "Funny" format still do lots of subliminal damage to us in the minds of the uninformed and firearm uneducated. The song sucks.

Here’s a little update. I did some research and apparently Weird Al is pro-gun control after all (big surprise). This is the text from the Permanent Record (his boxed set) booklet quoting Al:

I think the song's pro-gun control sentiment is fairly obvious, but
one day I was doing an interview in Canada on a call-in talk show,
and somebody called in and said 'Oh, I think it's great that
you wrote this song, because I love guns, I got a lot of guns
and I think it's great that you'd write a song like that.' Not
wanting to explain the irony to someone who's heavily armed
I simply said 'Thank you very much!'"

It's just in fun. Laugh at it and go on. Comedians trying to make political points is the joke. If you let it get under your skin then Mr. Yank o vich achieved his goal.

Sometimes taking ourselves too seriously can hinder our message. But then again I watch South Park and think Jimbo is a hoot.

    JT,

Evidently Al Yankovic thinks it's really OK to offend gun owners at will. After all, we probably don't support his attempts at entertainment and he seems to think he'll sell more records aggravating us than putting out real music. He has another song about Santa blowing everyone away around Christmas that presents Santa as an out-of-control gun nut.

No, I don't believe you're being "too sensitive" and those songs are a "load of crap". But, then again, my wife says that my political stance is somewhere to the right of Attilla the Hun...but it seems to me the political left doesn't like to be told they're politically incorrect on occasion.

I applaud his efforts in rightfully ridiculing the strains of popular culture I hate, but the guy's also a vegan hippy. He may be funny but I doubt we'd get along very well in person.

I've seen him on TV and the like and he just seems like someone who's been raised completely outside the gun culture, and who hasn't really thought about the issue very much.

He strikes me as one of these people who lives in a happy little world where nothing bad ever happens because everything's fun and games. Considering he probably formed his opinion around his peers in the entetainment community and I wouldn't be surprised.

I've heard the Santa song but wasn't aware of this one. The Santa song didn't really strike me as being against 2A rights, but I agree this one is just unfair to over 66 million Americans.

It may be ''in fun'' but it certainly conveys a bad message and not one that helps any sane gun owner - instead I can imagine anti's lapping it up and all but grabbing it for their own end.

It does not sit well with me I must admit - smacking as it does of irresponsible gun-nut feel.

In his defense he also put out "Genius in France", which cracks me up.

If he did a song making fun of black people or Jews would a black person or Jew be "too sensative" if they got annoyed or upset?
