    Guys...I made it back...

    Guys,

Got back into town last night, and started catching up on the forums today. Wnated to let everyone know that Mississippi was actually a lot of fun, considering how well I knew the guys I was going down with when we left, but then again, 20 hours in the car to bond will help that along.

I posted pictures from my trip (I'll be getting more later in the week) on my newly created webshots account, and they can be found here.

I also posted entries to my Livejournal for the trip, if people are interested. Be forwarned, it's about 8 pages of text if you print it all out, and so makes for a long read.

Thanks for the well wishes before I left.

    Rick...

you can't have an understanding of the power of a hurricane until you've lived through one... and having seen the damage... i don't ever want to have that experience...!!!!

other then that... yeah... some teams work well together, some don't.

it's better to know ur team going in then not...

Just read your log entries...you are a good writer and thanks for taking time (after long days of hard work!) to put your thoughts on record.

Did FEMA organize this effort? Throwing 4 strangers together and asking them to work as a construction crew seems a little rough, but it's the only way to get a volunteer effort in gear. How did you become involved with this project?

And, your description of Ryan's made me hungry just by reading it

    Rick...

Actually FEMA had no part in it at all. The superintendant for the local school district down there knows one of the professors at my college. The engineering school runs semester long projects, and one of the ones they did this semester was a management type of team to help the relief efforts. We have several grad students that work at the Stenis NASA center in MS, and several professors have contacts down there.

The professor who knows the superintendant is also running the clinic team, so they did a little talking, figured out where we could help, and the clinic team asked for volunteers. I wanted to help, was even considering joining a FEMA vol. fire team, but couldn't justify the month off from school it would cost me. This seemed like a decent way to help out, and was definately school approved. I chose what week I wanted to go, and they scheduled me accordingly. It was random chance that I didn't end up with a classmate or two instead of the random guys I was with.

About as close as we came to FEMA was 1) the trailer park across the street from the baseball field which was set up by FEMA, 2) the FEMA trailers we saw heading south as we were and 3) one of the guys in the group, his father works for FEMA, but no, they didn't organize this.
