What to see?
What to avoid?
Any special rules on carry in the area?
(I know that KY and TN recognize the OH CHL - just need to know any specific areas to watch out for...)

Hit the search button...type in Gatlinburg...see the second entry "Pigeon Forge, TN Questions".
I think you find all the info you need.
Add on: In Pigeon Forge, go to Lee Greenwood's Theater (you've heard his songs)...Great show! Gatlinburg has a great aquarium, too!

my wife did that - she found what she needed to find
(all I see is "tourist trap")
ah well - it looks like rain for a good part of the week anyway...
just figured if anyone spends any time around there they might recommend a favorite spot to eat or ...

In Pigeon Forge "Bull Fish" was a very good meal last week.
Be sure to get a good map, once you spend a couple of hours getting there and seeing the shops etc. you will want to use the back roads to get around to save time and enjoy the stay without all the traffic.
One other word of advise - BE prepaired for slow moving traffic.
MAJOR tourist trap.
Like it said expect slow moving traffic thru Pigeon Forge. If you go to Pigeon Forge go to the mill. Ask any one there how to get there. The shop there closes at 8PM.
Go to Sevierville and get to the Knife works. UNBELIVABLE ! Oh... the 3rd story is the museum....don't forget that. That can be an all day affair.
Gatlinberg itself has tightly knit streets compared to Pigeon Forges' wide boulavards, so take your walking shoes. Drive over the mountain to Cherokee, N.C. and stop at the vistas' for that kodak moment. Might as well pack for a picnic, because you'll want to stop at one of those areas.
You'll have fun...

One of my favorite getaway spots over the past few years. For tourist stuff the knife works and Acorn are both decent enough places to spend a little while. But mostly I just like goin up in the mountains around there. I do recall some decent steakhouses are down there, but forget the names.

The towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are huge tourist traps, but I admit I like going down there in the off season. Pick an area you'd like to explore, park and walk for the day.
I also like exploring the mountain roads on my motorcycle, but getting off the beaten path is a must as a lot of squids like to do the same thing and end up "becoming one with the mountain."

The hawkers up and down the Parkway are not really giving away $100 and there are no free tickets to any show in Pigeon Forge. Its a time share presentation that takes 3 hours and they try to wear down the poor souls that fall into their trap. Good place to eat is Calhouns and the Micro Brewery close to it. The clock seller is a nice place. Browse the mall the cowboy store has some good stuff. I carry up there all the time EXCEPT in any place that sales beer or liquor by the drink. In TN it is a felony to carry in a bar. Hogs and Honey is a good place to have a cold one and people watch. Bearskin Lodge on the River is a nice place to stay.
Be sure to see Ripley's Aquarium and check out Cades Cove In the National Park. The Peddler and the Cherokee Grill are good steakhouses, but both are pricey.
