Yep - many fine ships in UK fleet in WWII - many lost too. Then there were the losses in Falklands too - the worst being the burned up Sir Gallahad.

Overall tonnage lost thru warfare - staggering!!!

Bob - thx for that link - just spent a few minutes enjoying reading some fascinating facts.
    Powder Charge:

The number of powder charges loaded, along with the elevation of the barrel, would determine the range of the gun. Depending on the specific type of gun and the projectile used the powder charge would vary, but for maximum range the charge would be six bags of powder (648 or 672 pounds) for the Navy MkII M1 gun, to four or eight bags of powder (total charge of 832 pounds) for the Army MkII and MkIII guns.
Adding that to the ton plus projectile - achieves cerebral overload, trying to imagine the sheer large scale of it all.

I thought this was pretty amazing - 26" thick faceplate!!!! -

Another interesting fact on the Masachusetts is, that she is placed in the North Carolina Class of Battleship. These were slightly smaller than the Iowa Class, but VERY manuverable. They also had 16 inch guns, as well as the 5 inch guns and 40MM "pom-poms"

IIRC the ''pom-poms'' were usually in banks of four, used primarily for AAA - yeah?

Did they ever have Bofors fitted to these vessels? Maybe that was on Brit ones.

What pictures and narratives! Can you IMAGINE sitting in some cave somewhere and hearing one of those shells SCREAMING in? Or two or three dozen?

    Gives me the "willies"!
