    True story

it was over 20 years ago and we had just gotten back for a trip out west, Wahl SD was on the list, Home of the Jackalope, it was about this time of year when my then 4 year old came running in the house all wide eyed and headed to the bathroom window and stared out very intently....
    Me... Whats wrong sweetheart?
Her... I just saw a Jackalope!!!
Me... I bet it was a deer, Jakalopes don't live this far east...
Her... She grabs some cookies and heads out to try and feed the deer.

Yeah...good thinking. Once that gets started, word gets out, next thing you know, you're overrun with them.

We had one on the wall in my pest control shop at Pope AFB in NC. Under it we had a brass placket that said " Jackalope, Lepus Antelopeus killed on Hurst Dr. Sept 18th 1981. Endangered Species, mounted by special permission of US Fish and Wildlife Service" We also ran a base cleanup detail where the other base squadrons would send us 2 different Airmen each week. I was amazed at how gullible many of them were. They would swallow the story hook line and sinker. Boy did we have fun with it. Then one of the civilians a 50 year old hillbilly KKK wanabee that had driven a mower and broom on base for 20 years that decided to tell everyone in the shop how his brother saw one in Raleigh when it ran through the "washiteria" window. He went on to describe the breeding and many other "facts" about them. We let him go on for about 3 days before we threw in the lier flag. Telling a fib for a joke is one thing but he was completely out of hand.

This was in our bug shop at Ramstein AFB in Germany. We figured if you gave the Germans enough beer they would mount anything. ;-)
