On paper, Montana has tough DUI laws. A 4th, and any subsequent conviction, is a felony.
In actual practice, it's a very different story. Prison sentences, while not rare, aren't frequently imposed, either.
Not too long ago, a guy did get sentenced to prison after his 10th DUI conviction.

And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.

This is just sad all the way around. For the victims as well as the perpetrator.

Four previous DUI arrests and he is only 22. Sick and he should pay severely, and I mean publicly too.

DUI's are a bad thing...first time, OK, anyone can make a mistake...it should be a 'costly' one.
Second time, you get a long vacation and lose you license for 5 years.
One more time...extended vacation...permanent loss of license.

Problem is that loss of license doesn't mean a lot to many drunk drivers. This fellow didn't have a license. Cut off his hands and feet so he can't drive.

I have an uncle who nipped the bottle a few too many times. Went through the DUI turnstyle once too often. The judge thought it was time he be shown the destination he was digging for himself, based on the threat he was posing to citizens. Got plopped into Joliet Prison (Illinois) for awhile. Let's just say it's called "the hole" for a reason. This was some years back. Hasn't been DUI since.
