Actually, lexan is better than plexiglass. Its 40 times more impact resistant. It wont crack at the edges near as much.

Ok, Folks - Thanks for all of the ideas! Here it is:
Six complete coats of Tung Oil. The first two coats were gently sanded down (120 grit, the second 220 grit), followed by four more coats with 0000 steel wool between coats.
I scratched it installing the pegboard, and a quick hit with steel wool and more Tung Oil fixed the scratch. I'll report on durability in a decade or two.........
