Son Accused Of Killing Dad To Hide Bad Grades

    POSTED: 7:12 am CST December 17, 2005
    UPDATED: 7:24 am CST December 17, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A 15-year-old boy allegedly killed his father then set their home on fire because he was afraid his father would find out he was failing some classes, prosecutors said.

Ryan Watts was charged Friday with murdering his father, 50-year-old John E. Bruner, who was initially believed to have died in the fire earlier this week. He was charged as an adult.

Watts was arrested Wednesday after an autopsy determined that Bruner died from multiple gunshot wounds and not from the fire, Santa Clara police said.

According to court documents, Watts told police he took a .45-caliber handgun from a safe in his father's bedroom and stashed it in his room shortly before the killing.

Court documents allege he shot his father in the head at close range Monday, then set the body on fire because it was too heavy to carry to the backyard, where he had planned to bury it. Watts hid the gun and went to Taco Bell before calling 911 to report the fire, the documents said.

Watts' parents apparently were separated, and he had been staying at his mother's home since the fire, police said.

If convicted, Watts faces life in prison. He is not eligible for the death penalty because he's a juvenile.

Watts is expected to enter a plea during a Dec. 22 court appearance.

That kid is screwed up on so many levels.

    Sarcasm,
Perhaps report cards need to be banned. There are some liberal "schools" that do not grade kids or they let the students grade themselves. This keeps the students from feeling judged and inferior to others.

Ive heard that some think teachers should also be tested. The response from teachers was that "it degrades them".

Not condoning the kid's actions in the least - but I have heard of cases where a father or mother drive a kid to such excess, the kid fears the slightest failure at all - abject fear.

    Bad situation al round.

A reminder that the world is filled with brilliant, creative, happy & successful adults who did not get totally fantastic perfect grades in school. It's not the most important thing.
It is important to try to motivate your kids to succeed but, not to push them to the point where you create pathetic, miserable, nervous, unhappy people with no self~worth.

Jeez, with my F+ average, I never even thought of that!!

Besides, if you kill off your parents, who's going to sign the report card.

The Valedictorian in my class was one who was pushed to her limits by her parents. She was always high-strung and bug-eyed from stress, over-worrying and complaining before tests, even though she would always make an A. It was painful to watch. Her parents pushed her to get every scholarship there was, even to schools she wasn't even interested in going to. Well, she got them, and upset a lot of students who wanted to go to those schools. She missed one scholarship, however, and the students heard her parents flat-out call her "stupid" for not applying for it. She would freak if someone made a higher score, and got jealous the one time I scored higher. She was incredibly smart, but her parents were hell on her.

I heard she turned into wild party girl when she went to college. She's a librarian now.

I can sympathize for a kid who's terrified of his parents for not being good enough, but there's no excuse for murder. There's things a lot harder in life than having a parent confront you about bad grades, and now he's going to find out.

    Thumbs up

    I Loved It.
That was my attempt not to show too much "hilarity" at Papa getting blasted into oblivion w/ a .45 over a doggone report card.

OK guys, I'm not trying to make excuses for the kid...but kids are generally a product of their parents. Maybe we should wonder how screwed up his Dad was that he felt killing him was a valid option?
