Lol...thanks, Cupcake, that gave me a good chuckle.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

What I want to know is, why does the typical SWAT team member wear a baclava?

The reasons are to protect against flash/fire (most of the balaclava's are Nomex, or they should be). Some officers, if they also work undercover, may want to conceal their identities, but this is not the "primary" reason that they are worn.

Also, I wouldn't say that it is typical - it is common, but by no means universal, for entry team guys to wear them. I think it was just easier for the artist to draw this way...

    Paymeister,
Maybe it serves a two-fold purpose. 1. A sort of psychological warfare factor? 2. To keep their identity hidden to prevent possible future retaliation?

1 is a no although it might be a byproduct for the weak minded. 2 quite possible. Guys like me serve both in a narcotics and SWAT. It would be a bad thing on a lot of cases for my face to be seen.

Other than that, we mostly wear them for protection (fire, like OPFOR pointed out) reasons, and this became SOP when the meth labs became a very common find.

I thought baklava was a Greek dessert with flakey crust, honey and nuts. Even though I usually wear my dessert on my face it is not for protection :).

    A balaclava is a mask.

I know I'm being anal so I'll shut up now.

I laughed out loud at the head crusher signal.

Good for you - I was trying to be funny (and thought it was spelled with a "c"). But I have wondered about the balaclavas as well, and really do appreciate all the straight answers.
