Washington state woman shot by stove

I couldn't help but get a chuckle out of this one.
Burned! Washington state woman shot by stove - Yahoo! News
SEKIU, Wash. - A woman in Washington state says her cast-iron stove shot her in the leg. Cory Davis tells the Peninsula Daily News that she had just stoked the heating stove in her home Sunday when she heard a loud bang and was struck in her left calf.

She says she initially thought "that was one fast hot coal flying at me."

In fact, she was hit by part of a 22-gauge shotgun shell that she had accidentally put into the stove with newspapers she used to light it. A box of shells had spilled nearby a few weeks before.

Davis says she removed the metal fragment herself Sunday and sought treatment for the shallow wound the next day.

But how do we call this one? An AD, ND? Or just one of those discharges that just happens out of the blue every now and then?

I'd like to see the gun that the 22 gauge shell was supposed to be used in.

Accidental discharge - someone accidentally put a shotgun shell in the stove.

Also, never heard of 22-gauge, I'm betting it was either 20 or 12 and someone made a typo.

I vacuumed up a .22 bullet one time. Broke my old vacuum cleaner and scared the heck out of me. Only AD/ND I've ever had.

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.

I think it was supposed to read 20ga...but how does lead fly out of a cast iron stove? Perhaps the door(s) were left open?
I doubt that there could be much velocity.

Good thing she didn't spring for the 12ga stove. That model has a real kick.

She's lucky to have had only minor injuries. Could have been worse.

I'm thinking it was probably a 22 caliber shotshell, not a shotgun shell.
Leave it to the media to get it wrong.

This sounds like complete male cow poo!
First the size of said cartridge is nonexistent.
Second if loaded cartage goes off in a fire it splits the case, without the barrel to force the projectile through rapid expansion of gasses will take path of least resistance and split the case, primer will make most of the noise powder will flash up some and sparks from fire will fly.

It could have been part of the shell casing or even part of the stove. She didn't say it was the bullet, just a piece of metal. I can see this happening and was it while she had the door open or did if fly through the grates? Lots of unknowns here but I would say it is highly possible.

YouTube - Mythbusters - Bullets exploding inside an oven

Funny timing. I saw this youtube of mythbusters last week trying to debunk or I guess bunk this. It was debunked. from a .22 caliber to a 44 mag to a 50 Cal it would not penetrate the skin of the stove until they anchored the cartridge down so the projectile had something to propel it. Cast iron, loose shell of whatever variety...me too thinks bovine scat.
