First bird hunt of the season

I went on my first bird hunt for the 2008 season yesterday, it was kind of depressing without a dog.

I was after the late doves, and I only saw four (my field selection stunk) two were downed. I missed a pair of high and fast flyers, I think my lead was a bit much. Had I used a more open choke, I think I would have been OK. I use dove season to hone my shooting skills and most years break dogs.

On to the exciting part... getting bored, I decided to work some brush and flushed a large covey of bobwhites... to bad they are not in season. I'll never get over the excitement of a good flush. I wish I had a dog with me, it was a perfect training opportunity.

Even though the hunt wasnt very successful, it was in its own way. It cemented the fever to get out after the larger game birds in a few weeks... and lit a fire under me to get another dog.

Sounds fun. My bird hunt for Ruffed grouse didn't even kick one up. Luckily the dog came along , so watching her run and snoop made it worth while.
I did get out duck hunting. Not the best of seasons so far . I did get some shooting and saw some nice sunrises and sets. Spending time with my dad and little brother made it all the better.

That says it all right there! We have had a limitless Eurasian dove (read exotic pidgeon) hunt here in AZ all year that has been really good for honing skills of both me and Ruger (the dog). I decided to go from my Franchi 720 back to my Remington Wingmaster this year, as most of the quail that I flushed last year were a ways out.

Sounds like ya need to be gettin a new dog.

I hear it's still rather warm back in Ohio, probably good bird weather. Bow season should be goin on too now IIRC.

It has been warm. Its been in the high 70's, when the norm is mid 60's. Thats all supposed to change this a.m. I'm gearing up for quail and pheasant seasons, and will probably do a little rabbit and squirrel too.

Bow season has started, and muzzle loader starts next week. The only season I hate is deer gun... the woods are filled with one day wonder warriors and they ruin good bird shooting. Oh well, it'll never change.

I think fall has finally arrived, its in the 50's with the crisp fall air. I think I'll be hitting the bean fields in the morning.

Ha, it was 102 here yesterday, with a decent dust storm.

    Happy Hunting!
