Beaumont police: Man impersonates UPS driver in robbery

A man pretending to be a UPS driver left a homeowner tied to a bedpost Friday after robbing him.
The aggravated robbery and home invasion occurred about 3:45 p.m., according to Beaumont police.
According to a police dispatcher, a man wearing a brown shirt with a collar and a cap knocked on the door of a home in the 7500 block of Shadow Creek, said he was with UPS and that the wrong package had been delivered earlier Friday.
The homeowner said the package was fine, but the man insisted there was a problem and that he needed to see the package.
The homeowner finally opened the door, and the man grabbed him by the neck, pulled out a silver semi-automatic pistol and asked for money, the dispatcher said.
Two more men wearing ski masks joined the first man in taking items from the house, a police dispatcher said.
The UPS impersonator is described as a 20- to 25-year-old black male, 5-feet, 8-inches, with short hair and is clean-shaven.
There were no other details of the other men involved. They might have left in a small, white four-door vehicle, the police dispatcher said.
How in the world do you let a guy grab you by the next when you are inside your house, and he's outside... He'd have to be awful close. I always step back as i open the door. Granted, it's so i can put a hand on the AR propped up next to it, but still.
If I answer the door (in the middle of the afternoon), I first use the side window to see who it is...if I don't know the person, but suspect it's OK, I open the door with Kimber in hand behind the door.
A BG UPS guy is going to be picking up a 'lead package' as he rushes into the doorway...SPECIAL DELIVERY...
Today one has to suspect anyone and everyone...no exceptions!

Stay armed...be prepared...stay safe!
I know the UPS guy real well,I hate Texas because you always got somebody knocking on your door trying to sell you something,at my house I look out the peeper if I don't know you I ask what ya want thru a closed door
Yet one more reason to have a PO Box. I dictate what I pick up, and when. I don't needlessly break my perimeter security on faith. I get tracking numbers on anything that would be delivered via UPS or FedEx, so I know whether a package is mine/requested, prior to even opening it. I also get to avoid situations like this home invasion and robbery (at least, those done on pretense of a "delivery").

I never let strangers in my house. I always step outside and my hand is nest to my pistol which is always opencarried when at home.
I have never had a UPS driver that looked like that Scott. I always meet the UPS truck by the back porch, she would probably asked to sit and chat awhile.
Let's see, no brown truck, no brown shorts, no UPS ID on his belt or shirt, no UPS logo on the brown shirt... prob not a UPS guy. Also, how did they know he had a package delivery earlier... can anyone say inside job?

I'm going to say these may have been guys who had some sort of plan... I'm willing to bet they took the time to either scope out this guy's house if they knew it's what they wanted to hit, or they followed around a UPS truck until they found a good target. At least that's what I'd do in this situation.
One very common ploy for drug dealers is to ship their goods via UPS, USPS FedEx Etc to a unwitting persons address. Typically the person is not home when the package is delivered, and the real recipient swoops in and takes the package as soon as the driver is out of sight.
I can't help but think this is were this may have started.
