Knee operation update...
Well, it would seem that M.R.I.'s are not the all-seeing-unfailing-diagnostic tools that Docs think they are.
My Doc thought that my knee wasn't in terrible shape judging by the MRI. I thought it must be wrong due to the amount of pain I had. Well chalk one up for me because once he got in there my Doc tells me that my knee is a lot more damaged and has a lot less cartilage than he thought. He said he was actually quite surprised at the condition of the joint.
Bottom line is this: he ground down the bone spurs, cleaned up some of the cartilage tears and pulled some back where it was supposed to be and smoothed some other cartilage rough spots. But, he says I probably will not be doing too much running.

Mike,
Have you thought about taking up swimming? Much, much better than running if you can find a place to do it.
Wish you had gotten better news from the doc. You play the hand that is delt you, I am sure you will work with it well.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

Well, I hope the recent work will at least alleviate some of the pain while you consider your other options.

You can probably live without the running, but how about future pain?
Will just plain walking or bike riding be a problem?
Hope you recover quickly...

I'd take not being able to run over pain any day. I have cronic knee pain in both knees. Has to do with jumping out of planes for some 20 years (militaty, not sport).
Here's wishing that even though he says it's bad that your body can heal you more then they expect.
By the way I'm still active duty for the next year and still jumping out of planes. But there are days I wish I could just stay curled up in bed.

I think I will be able to do that. I have some .40 cal snap caps for dry fire practice.
I should be able to walk with less pain and as for riding the bicycle, that should be no problem at all. But, looks like the dream of running 5K's might be dead.
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone.

Glad to hear that part is over, and you can dedicate yourself to recovery! BTW, running is overrated. Take care!

We have some really cool and fun bike races around here, its kinda like an "Amazing race" meets "Survivor" meets Tour De France type of thing. Maybe you can find something like that to do in your area.

Good luck in the recovery...try not to get too bored.
I've BTDT, twice.
Swimming is good for the knee. Low impact, keeps it lubed up and it doesnt get as stiff. It'll keep you from getting too fat while you are laying around...

Same here, been there three times. Swimming is probably the best rehab for knees. Good luck with your recovery.

I've had two knee surgeries on my right knee and I will never be running ever (if I don't want any pain). But, I do walk a lot and any other activity is still ok.
The surgery is a piece of cake, it's the rehab that's a Hillary. Keep at it.
