Both my sons have moved away and I have told them, over and over, if you are coming home let us know. Even then, shout out your name when you come in the first time. My dad almost shot one of his closet friends who was drunk and trying to come in the back door at night.

And when I am home, if I'm up and about late, I plan to hit the floor and yell if I hear the parents' door open

Something does not sound right here. I think there may be more to this story.

She was outside and came in VIA the basement and then went into the basement bathroom.
She was probably in there seated (as females usually are) in the B Room
If...(while seated) she was struck by the projectile in the knee - the bullet very likely would have entered the knee and then traveled up the leg finally coming to rest in her thigh area.

This is a real concern that my wife has had for quite some time. This is why our kids (although quite young) are instructed to yell to us when they get out of bed in the middle of the night. This is very annoying but does help in the safety factor dept.

I also keep 2 flashlights in my gunsafe next to the bed- One is for me when I search out noises my wife hears (I sleep like a dead man) and the other is for her when/if she would need to assist or ??? Both of us routinely "search" the house with flash lights as practice. I hope that we can all learn from this to distinguish our "intruder" before taking action. As a child I sleep walked and I keep this in mind that it could be one of my children doing this or a neighbor.
