A cardboard figure of a person inside a Somerset County bank kept police at bay for 90 minutes tonight, authorities said.

The standoff at the PNC Bank on routes 518 and 601 in the Skillman section of Montgomery Township ended at about 10:20 p.m., Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said.

Police responded to the bank when an alarm went off about 8:40 p.m.

When officers arrived, they saw what they thought was at least one person through the windows of the bank, which had its blinds drawn, according to authorities.

Police then sealed off the area to traffic and evacuated residents in three nearby apartment buildings .

"I drove in the parking lot (of my apartment building) and see all these guys with guns," said Ross Stout

Authorities tried to make contact with whoever might be in the building. Officers used bullhorns, and then tried to call inside the building, Forrest said.

After failing to get any response from the figure inside, the SWAT team entered.

To their chagrin, they discovered the "person" seen inside the building was a full-size cardboard figure, Forrest said.

Once the cops got the number, they should have just faxed in pictures of handcuffs.

There was a story similar to this in the UK........Police were called when a figure with two handguns was seen thru an apartment window.....

It was a card board cut out of Tomb Raider's lead character.....

I'm surprised they didn't have a sniper "take him out"!

Can you imagine their initial reaction when the cut-out didn't go down?

Mmmmm.... think I need one of those for the house. Cardboard guardboard. Keeps prowlers at bay when you're not at home. Wait. That sounds like a great product. I'm rich! Er... forget I mentioned it, OK?

Why would you evacuate the nearby aprtment buildings? That just makes no sense to me? This whole evacuate and lockdown thing that seems to be popular these days seems to be noting more than a ridiculous overreaction or an abuse of power or something. If I'm in my nearby house, i don't give a darn what is going on at the bank, I aint leaving my house. That's just stupid.

Reminds me of college days: off the back fence of the house we were renting was a busy road. On the second floor, I wanted to put a silhouette of a fellow pointing a gun in one window, and someone with their hands up in the next. I figured I could make them with cardboard, a strong light and a roomate, then just pin them to the inside of the light curtains. By God's grace I never put them up, figuring it would probably cause a wreck as someone did a double-take. I never thought about official visitors.
