I am a proud Dad of a 14 year old daughter!
First off let me say, I am the father of 5 great kids. 4 boys and 1 girl. My oldest son is about to turn 18 and he likes to shoot but is much more of a computer nerd than the outdoors man type. That's fine, the world needs computer nerds in ever increasing numbers so he should be OK. He wants to join the Military after high school so no argument from me.
My daughter is 14 and this post is primarily about her so we will come back to her in a minute.
I have a son who is about to be 13. He is very much an outdoors type. In fact, if I didn't make him come in for dinner and to go to bed, I doubt highly that he would. Right now, he has little interest in hunting, but would like to fish more.
We have 2 6 year old boys (fraternal twins) who are as different as they can be. One is a jock, loves all sports and could really care less about video games and has much less interest in computers than his one minute older brother who LOVES video games and is showing signs of being a big computer nerd. As I said before, the world needs more of those all the time.
Now to my daughter. She loves make up. She LOVES clothes. In fact, I believe she owns more clothes than all the rest of us in the house combined. She loves to shop. She loves to do all the normal girly things. She is very pretty, has in the last year lost al the "baby fat" that most early teen girls carry and has developed quite the figure (which scares the heck out of me).
At the same time, she loves sports. Plays softball in a competitive league. Loves to watch college football with me and can really be a heck of a tom boy.
Saturday, we needed to go to the store for some stuff (5 kids eat a lot necessitating frequent supply runs to the grocery store) and she asked if we could go to the Bass Pro Shop and look around. I was so proud and said of course we could. First wave of pride hits!
When we got there I asked her brothers what they wanted to look at and they all just said they didn't know. I asked her and she said she wanted to look in the hunting section because she was thinking of asking for a bow for Christmas. 2nd wave of pride hits!
We go back there and she is looking at box and then asks if we can go look at deer rifles. 3rd wave of pride!
She looks at several and decides she really likes a couple and can't decide which she likes better. Then she asks me the big question: "When are you going to take me deer hunting Dad?"
I almost teared up right there in the store. I gave her a big hug and told her as soon as we can. I am pretty much down for this deer season because of knee surgery but next year, she and I will be in the woods I can guarantee you.
And just to really kick in the pride factor, she asked me when we were leaving if we could go turkey hunting next fall too!
And she informed me over a year ago that she wants her first carry gun to be a Glock 26.
What more could a Dad ask for?
