Well it’s not all that bad. This is a reprieve, not an escape. The PM introduced a fiscal plan that would remove the $1.97 each party gets from the government for each vote that it receives. Now this would sort of hurt the governing conservatives, but it would absolutely cripple the opposition parties. You see the left wing types aren’t very good at going out and raising money and their supporter are rather cheap. The Liberals (centre-left, previously felt that governing Canada was their god-given right and terribly anti-gun) had a nasty internal battle and their PM pushed through a motion banning unions and corporations from donating money to political parties, which was their lifeblood. The conservatives have a excellent fundraising arm and have oodles of honestly earned cash.

This attack on their money purse was the only thing that could drive the opposition parties together, the Liberals, the NDP (Left-wing) formed a coalition to defeat the government, except they didn’t have enough votes, so they brought in the Bloc (separatist party who want to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada) this agreement is a deal with the devil and he can make or break them any time. It was this coalition (AKA The 3 Stooges) that tried to convince the Governor General (Queens Rep) that they could form a government, problem is that the conservatives won more seats in the last election at the expense of the Liberals but 12 short of a majority. Things have been getting nasty, the PM went to the GG and asked for a end of parliament till January. The GG read the mood of the country well and agreed. This gives both sides time to sort out the mess and come January if the coalition still exists they will be able to defeat the government on the fiscal issue, whereupon they have to convince the GG that they can run a government or a new election is called. This is a all or nothing gamble by both sides, the conservatives could lose control of the government or the Liberals could be faced with another election with a lame duck leader and millions in debts they can’t pay.

And you thought all we cared about was hockey……

I wouldn't worry about it, the world is going to end on December 21, 2012 so it won't matter anyway.....
