    From Associated Press
A police officer cuts a gun in half with acetylene, a highly flammable gas used in welding, in Panama City, Thursday, July 19, 2007. Weapons seized between 1991 and 2004 were destroyed.

It could be worst....... I saw that happen to a WWII era P 38 with matching serial numbers and full Nazi QA stamps. I almost cried!

Because it's more important to kill the evil gun than, oh, I don't know, make it available cheaply to little old ladies who live alone and pass a gun safety course, thereby getting the gun off the street, adding a little to the department's bottom line, and helping a little old lady protect herself.

I don't really understand this. My local sheriff's department just auctioned off the guns that they had confiscated. They made over $17,000, and used part of the money to purchase new Sigs for the deputies. That seems like a much better idea than just destroying the weapons.

It’s a crying shame how many weapons are destroyed just so some local government can feel good knowing they have helped to support crime.

I see a vintage 1911 up in the top left corner w/ a lanyard loop mainspring housing.
You would at least think they would pop off the original wood grips and get $200 for them.
$200 buys a lot of donuts.

Cool! I might actually be making my supper in a skillet made out of the pistol I had stolen years ago? I was wondering if it was ever going to be returned to me.

Breaks my heart to think of all the classic 1911s that met the very same fate.
I sure do hate to think about one more going "bye-bye" exactly the same way.

THis is a sad thing, however, these guns were likely siezed and were in evidence for years. They may have been involved in murders.

If that is the case, it may not be "legal" to put them back into service and I wouldnt consider it ethical to put a murder weapon back on the market.

Most look like modern weapons. I wonder how much effort went into finding the legal owners?

    Why?
    It's a government program, isn't it?
