    Bird-Brained blues...

How to stop woody the woodpecker...?

Looks like I'm going to be out with the pellet gun a lot for a week or so. I've been noticing a lot more wood peckers around the last 6 months or so and paid them no mind until today. Buggers pecked solid circles all the way around my maples! I came home today and noticed fluid streaming down a few of the maple trees around the full circumference. I went and checked and they have apparently pecked all the way around the trunk on several of them which means the trees will probably die short order. Darn it all, they help block out the view to the neighbors place during the warm months.

Time to kill two birds with several "stones".

They can be surprisingly destructive little critters. I had to go out once and dispatch a couple for a friend of mine. They were pecking holes right through the siding of his house into the attic.

Shoot, shovel and forget! Been there, done it, and don't have "Woody" bothering my siding any more.

Sapsuckers create a similar wound too. They drill the hole to then lick up the sap. Go to an nursery, get some goop to repair the wound, wrap it in paper tape. Wrapping the trunks where you see the birds working may deter them.

Woodpeckers often attack siding on houses when they are infested. The woodpeckers can hear the bugs in the siding, hence they peck them out to eat the lil' buggers. Call an exterminators to see if that helps on siding.

Native non-game birds are protected under federal and state laws, hence shooting a woodpecker could land you in deep do do.

Get some cats. I have a lot of Woodpeckers but don't have much trouble with them due to my cats. I of course have a lot of dead snags in my swamp for them to peck on. There have been a few that hit my neighbors roof once in a while, my cats can't get up there.

The only experience I ever had with Woodpeckers was when one started pecking on my metal furnace vent. Apparently pecking is also how they attract a mate and our metal furnace vent made a nice loud picking noise. Well, I cranked up the heater and after about 5 minutes he left. Never saw him again.

Yeah got that problem every now and then too. I think it actually drives the dog more bonkers than me.

For some reason I thought it was bad juju to kill a woodpecker!
