    Falling ice!

Friday, I was working at our Transmitter site and while I was there with one of my co-workers we kept hearing something strange on the roof of the building. At first we thought that we might have a rat running around up there, so we went outside to see what we could see.

Turns out, we had large chunks of ice dropping off the 1000 foot TV Transmitter tower. The building has an ice bridge over it to protect it from this. (the picture with the 2 vehicles in it, the transmitter building is in the background and the ice bridge is the structure over the building)

Some of the chunks of ice were small, most were about phone book size, but some were quite large. I have attached a picture that shows the aftermath of one large piece after it smashed into the ground. The two yellow lines indicate the tire tracks from my '94 Jeep Cherokee, and as you can see, the piece of ice was much longer than the width of my Cherokee's wheels.

It was an interesting morning to be sure!

    Mike,

Good to hear that no one got hurt from the falling ice.

The thought of phonebook size pieces falling towards me, sends a shiver up my spine.

Well, they are coming from 1000 feet up so you have enough time, as long as you are looking up, to see them coming and get out of the way.

You just don't venture out from under the ice bridge too much, and when you do, it is with your eyes pointed up. Most of the ice "flutters" and tends to land out away from the building, but the larger chunks, they come down a lot faster and do not flutter. Though they do drift out from the tower, sometimes as much as 50 feet or so. Unless they come down like a spear. Those make it to the ground pretty darn fast.

It was crazy here is southwest Kentucky too. Some areas look like they have been bombed with only tree trunks sticking up...no limbs left. Power lines down everywhere. Finally got power at my house Friday afternoon (out since Monday). Went shooting this AM and got a call from the wife: power out again, fire truck in our drive, small fire in the front yard. Transformer went kapoot. If you're going to have an outage with 4000 others, have a fire. You go back to the front of the line. Fixed within an hour!
