In a police station surrounded by 16 LEOs

For Sixto and other LEOs I've met on this and other forums. Perhaps you will be amused.

I'm taking a class to become a Certified First Medical Responder. The class is at a police station and I'm the only civilian student. Everyone except the instructor and me are allowed to carry and I'm an NRA Certified Instructor in Pistol. Go Figure.

Another observation. They are all so young.

First sign you're getting older, doctors and cops are younger than you.

Unless some in the class serve in a military reserve status; you and the rest of the class are all civilians, they may be sworn peace officers but they are civilians.

LOL, we host those types of things all the time. We even host CCW classes at the PD.
No offense, but the NRA certs. don't mean squat once you make it to the center ring. Sit back and relax, enjoy the class. There are plenty of others to watch out for you.

Not worried. My comment's intent was humor through irony. Just my odd sense of humor.

None taken. Of all the skills I learned in obtaining the certification, the one I'm most confident in are my Powerpoint skills. I'll be volunteering with several seasoned instructors in improve my pedagogy. The initial reason I went to the class was not to instruct but to improve my pistolcraft. I've always felt that learning to teach something dramatically improves you skills over just learning it.

The best benefit of the NRA certification is the deep discounts available from some manufacturers.

Absolutley. I've learned far more from teaching than I ever have as a student. Thats true with firearms, narcotic investigations, FTO'ing the rookies or whatever else I teach from time to time.

How is that rookie thing going? Did you, or do you still have a rookie with you?
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

I have him. Its going well. My patience is being tested, but it does help that he is not a young kid. He is well into his 30's, and just got out of the military... but he is completely green to police work.

I have a few stories to share, I was going to type one up last night after work but I went to sleep instead. I'll post a new thread about it soon. We have had a busy few weeks, and he has learned a few things the hard way.

Some may laugh at an individuals ire over the term civilian but it is important to try to understand...

We are in a serious time of change, where many think class will determine your lot in the future.
Police recieve special treatment based solely on the job they applied for. (NOT A COP BASH!!!! This is the governments fault NOT the individual officer.)
Even an off duty officer has more right to self defense than the typical citizen.

    SOOOOOOOOOO......

When LEO refer to J.Q. Public as CIVILIAN (whether retired or ex or active military or not) we feel the governments continued pressure that LEO are not civilian. That to be a citizen is less than being LEO.

More importantly, when some snot nosed 22 y/o rookie refers to me as a "civilian" my natural desire to rattle off at the mouth breaks loose. I immediately feel the need to tell him how I have spent more hours on the John at test depth then he has spent pleasuring himself to a JC Penny's catalog.

    FOR THOSE INTERESTED...

PM me and I will explain in gory detail the true phrase.

We are all civilians just as we are all citizens.
If they shoot at you over here you are a civilian and a LEO.
If they shoot at you over there you are military.
If they shoot at you and you shoot back you are a true citizen.

I'm having difficulty understanding the term civilian as a pejorative. Although I grew up in the Viet Nam era, I've viewed civilian as someone not serving in the sense that they were not in service to the public or the nation with their life at stake. Therefore, I'm completely comfortable with being called a civilian and honor those that serve in the military, police and fire service and thank them at almost every opportunity. A traffic stop is the possible exception.
