I'm so excited, I can't stand it!
Last night, just before dusk. We back up to a smallish wetland/conservation area and it just strolled through our backyard right at the edge. Sorry, there just wasn't time to grab a camera, but I watched it for a good 15 seconds from no more than 30 feet away. A stunningly beautiful animal.
For those that don't know, the FL Panther is extremely rare and endangered. Less than 100 are thought to remain....and most are much further south than we are. Many of those that remain have been tagged and even have tracking collars. This one didn't have any collar or tag that I could see. I notified the state wildlife office and they seemed pretty excited. They're sending a biologist out today.
I think we'll keep our little schnauzer on a leash for awhile rather than let her run around the backyard in the evening........
Just wanted to share.

Wow, very cool sighting!

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

Wow, growing up in central Florida (1960s) we would sometimes hear them at night but to actually see one would be a real treat.

I saw one as a kid in the Ft Myers area. It was right around dusk, and my sister and I were swimming in the pool. The pool deck was right on the edge of a wooded area, and the panther just popped out of the woods, walked up a grassy area for a few yards, then disappeared into the woods.
I told my Dad, he didnt believe me at first. He thought I was out in the sun to long or something. Then, he was out talking with another neighbor, and he saw the same cat a few times before as well.
"Just blame Sixto"
That is so cool! Carry your camera for the next month or so; you may get a pict!

I want to hear the update after you talk to the biologist.

A couple of years ago I was leaving the house on my motorcycle, on my way to work, and as I pulled out of the drive, one crossed the road right in fornt of me. The first, and only one, I've seen here in East TX. It's always a lot of fun to see one of the rare cats that we have living around us. Not so fun when they interact with humans, or our pets.
Y'all be safe now, ya hear!
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Great to hear of your sighting, the Florida version is rare.
I have heard that there has been sightings of a cougar in our neighborhood south of Tyler, Tx. We have known about coyotes and disappearing house cats, but I would like to see a cougar/mountain lion/panther. I have a medium sized dog that has roamed the neighborhood for years but the small dogs also will disappear.
Supposedly the black bear is also returning to East Texas and NW Louisiana.
We need some more sasquatch too..
Yoda, I am, yes.
Never saw one in person. Always hoped to though. We see a ton of Hogs, Bear, and Turkey over here though. Panther would be an awesome sight.
2A is not negotiable
I have heard stories of them even here in Texas but have never seen one. Way cool ........hope you get a pic or 2.

Not too many folks have ever seen a FL panther. They are extremely scarce.
You were really in the right place at just the right time.

"He went on two legs, wore clothes and was a human being, but nevertheless he was in reality a wolf of the Steppes. He had learned a good deal . . . and was a fairly clever fellow. What he had not learned, however, was this: to find contentment in himself and his own life. The cause of this apparently was that at the bottom of his heart he knew all the time (or thought he knew) that he was in reality not a man, but a wolf of the Steppes."
