    New York City

I searched for a similar thread and could not find it, but I do remember reading it. It's about the Do's and Don't while in Manhattan.

I have accepted a job that requires me to go to Fairfield, New Jersey for five weeks for training. It is about 45 minutes from NYC. I figured it wouldn't hurt to go to NYC since I'll already be near there and unarmed anyway.

While I am there, I thought I'd take a gander at the Big Apple. Please don't give me the "don't go... blah blah blah" I just plan on heading in for a few hours just to check it out, then getting out.

Anyone have any safety pointers, besides "Don't go"

    Thanks.

    Enjoy it

Stay off the dark side streets at night. SA yellow. Nothing that you have not hear before. You can pick-up tickets to major show the night of normally have 1 or 2 here and there. Not front row center buy every seat is a good seat. I have seen Wicked twice and would see it again. Backstory/Afterstory to the Wizard of Oz. Really good.

Make sure you see the USS Intrepid museum.
It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

There are tons of places to go in NYC. Too much to do in even a few days time. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head would be to keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket or front pocket. Have fun its a great place. If you go during the winter dress warm. Those city streets are like a wind tunnel.

Stay out of the alleys and make sure the meter is reset and the rates posted inside any cabs you get in. The cabbies are ruthless.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.

Go to a book store and get a tri-fold map that has the streets and subway lines on it. Always know where you are and where you're going. Cabs are the easiest way to navigate. Manhattan is actually very safe. I grew up in Fairfield, not a bad town.

    I grew up in NYC.
Do the museums! (Truth: I grew up in the museums.)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has the most amazing gun (and armor) collection you've ever seen. Get there by subway.
Walk West across Central Park, by way of the Belvedere and the Shakespeare Garden, and find the American Museum of Natural History (at 72nd St.).
The Akeley animal habitat displays, and his elephants, at the Natural History Museum are not to be missed. Also see their dinosaur collections.
Walk around the south end of Central Park, and look for Alice in Wonderland. The little zoo on the East side of the park used to be pretty good, too. Then find General Sherman and his horse (if you know the words to "Humoresque").
Then there's the Museum of Modern Art, with Brancusi's "Bird in Space" and Rodin's "Balzac."
And those are just a few of the highlights...

Someone will grab it and run. I've seen several snatch&grabs and they only need a split second to rip a camera or binoculars right off your neck and be long gone before anyone can move. If you don't see them before the grab, there is no stopping them.

Also don't fear driving in as long as you are willing to pay for safe parking. Don't pick the dark dirty parking garages.

Also just be aware of the people around you. And there are probably 10 more people around you in NYC at any given time, than you actually realize so it is no easy task.

I would say don't act like a tourist, but since I grew up in NJ and lived in Manhattan several years I never was a tourist, so I'm not sure how to break that habit. I've told people not to act like tourists in NYC before, but that only makes them look MORE like tourists.

Just stay in Manhattan, and you will be pretty safe.
