We are all Socialist Now
I just saw the NEWSWEEK magazine cover on FOX news this morning “We are all Socialist Now”
After years of telling the uninformed people that I run into every day, it is finial put on the front cover, and I am told that it is being touted as a good thing!
I wonder if they will pay more attention now.

Yep, and we sold ourselves the toxic subprime mortgages we hung ourselves with...

We all got redistribution of wealth checks last year. Sounds about right to me!

As long as magazine covers and Fox "News" are taken serious, we will keep having politicians that try to create favorable headlines and soundbites vs. actual solutions.

We are not all socialists-it is great exaggeration
We are not all socialist, if by that you mean that the government owns or control the means of production and the distribution of income.

Some of you guys wouldn't know socialism if it came up and introduced itself.
Some more examples: steel and aluminum production, privately owned.
BANKS, BROKERAGES PRIVATELY OWNED STILL.
Don't believe it? Check the stock market page. You can buy stocks in banks and brokerage houses.
Auto companies? I happen to own shares in Toyota and bonds (G-d help me in GM and GMA). These are privately owned.
Shall we go on: Computer software and manufacturing---Microsoft is privately owned; Apple is privately owned.
How about apartment buildings with rental units-- mostly privately owned except some HUD stuff.
Income-- (except for social security and to a much lesser extent unemployment benefits) most income is privately acquired the old fashioned way, through work or theft. Lately there has been a lot of the latter in certain industries. .
Housing construction is in the hands of innumerable small business owners.
I can go on and on.
There is very little socialistic or communistic in our society. And the few things government does, it does for the common good and it is stuff that needs to be done.
At the Federal level, government employment reached a low per capita of the general population under -- CLINTON. And it has remained low as a fraction of the total population.
So, which services do you want to give up? FBI? Prison administration? Court Administration? Air Traffic Control? Food stamps. Aha, you don't like giving stuff away. Well, the big beneficiaries of the food stamp program are the Agri-business folk because this program makes a market for the produce. The second big beneficiary is all of us because we don't have starving people roaming the streets, and malnourished kids trying to get through the school day.

Could start with the IRS and BATFE.

So somewhere, there's an appropriate level of government service, and each person will of course have thier own opinion. I feel that we're past "ideal" line. I personally don't the the federal gov't should be responsible for much of what it does now, and things like taking care of people should be at a community and local level. Federal gov't should be for the common defense of the 50 soverign states, and to aid the interstate understanding lets those 50 states act interact and trade and lets people of those states travel, etc. That and precious little else. The rest should fall to, and on the states.

More and more banks are becoming less "privately owned" now they can't even pay their executives what they want to.(a lot of these execs. aren't worth much) These banks are kicking themselves now for taking Obamas money, oops, I mean our money. We are on our way to socialism. I can see it happening right before my eyes. Sure, these companies are privately owned, but some are now being managed by the government. The smaller the gov. the better off we are.

Oh really? How short some memories are. So far, ALL the money banks have received was proposed by the Bush administration Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, and has been distributed right up to the last second of the last administration--two weeks ago.

Moreover, read the stimulus package bill. Most of the money isn't going to banks, but to turnkey necessary projects. My favorite which isn't getting enough, is wind energy generation. I'm a big fan of wind energy and buy half my electricity from wind facilities even though it costs 2-3 cents per kw more. In time, as transmission lines are built with stimulus package money, the price will drop below coal and natural gas generated power--I hope T B Pickens becomes a trillionaire.

Swaggs "No IRS = no taxes = no budget = no (among other things) military"
Not entirely true. I fyou instate a fair tax there is no need for the IRS as is. Tax would still be collected hence funds avaialable and would be collected by businesses. Individuals would not have to pay anything except when they buy new items.
I do not mean any disrespect but I find what you are proposing to fall in line with FDR and hence support what congress and the old and new administrations are pushing. However Govt. intervention does not save teh economy. The reason we pulled out of the Great Depression was because of WWII not FDR. Europe was in a great demand of goods and they had to rebuild their infrastructure before being able to supply goods for themselves. We however had not been bombed nor invaded so we still had our full production up and running. This had a great supply and demand curve that brought us out of the depression. The current plans are rediculous. Wind energy may be noble attempt however it will not produce enough energy to get us away from Oil. Needs for nuclear and other alternatives may need to be looked at, but oil is not as harmful as what you hear. Again no disrespect just some food for thought.

I advocate removing the IRS, not taxes.

I don't like flat tax, don't like sales tax, and absolutely don't like income tax.
I think the constitution had it right from the beginning.
We could probably stand to cut the FCC by about 50-75% too.
