Just fired off an e-mail to Mr. Kelley (skelley@timespicayune.com):

    Dear Mr. Kelley,

I recently saw your cartoon below and take offense to your choice of wording. Regardless of what the current administration would have us believe, the guarantees of the 2nd amendment are an individual Right as affirmed by Heller v. DC, not a privilege. When a suspect is arrested and mirandized, he has the Right to remain silent, not the privilege. The second amendment is no different, it is an individual Right, as are the balance of the rights enumerated in our Constitution.

There are many who would like to rescind the 2nd amendment, and at times it seems as if there is an all-out fight by the media, the Brady Campaign, and the current administration to do so. Your cartoon just seems to be another such attack designed to erode the rights guaranteed by our Constitution.

    Sincerely,
    Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxx

I'll be sending an appropriate reply to that cartoon as well. Some people just don't get it. The second amendment is not a privilege. It's a right!

Cartoons are a form of comedy.
Calling my 2nd amendment rights a privilege is not something I find humor in.

Fortunately the 1st amendment allows freedom of speech, witch also gives people the right to make an idiot out of themselves

    Just to be 100% Fair.

Regarding Steve Kelly - It's his 1st Amendment RIGHT to call it a privilege if that is what he wants to call it.

Of course we DO have the RIGHT to correct him & that would be my absolute pleasure rather than my privilege.

Words are very subtle things. If the general public hears/reads about the 2A RIGHT as a privilige often ecough, they will begin to think of it as such. Thus making it easier for the Brady's to slip in and chisel away at it.

This kind of mindset must always be brought to light! GRRRR!

I like the cartoon very much. I like how the armed citizen is still breathing and the BG is running away.

People hear suggestive wording enough times and and they begin to speak it themselves. Thats how ignorance is spread.

So I received a reply from Mr. Kelley, but it was addressed to someone else. It seems someone copied my e-mail I posted and also sent it along, adding a single sentence.

Anyhow, here is the reply from the cartoonist:

    Dear Xxxx:

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote. It is the practice, however, to refer to the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination as a privilege. Often it is cited that way in court. I thought using the word privilege made the cartoon a little more amusing, as it is more incongruous to assert a privilege, than a right, at gunpoint. Still, I can see your point, and will keep it in mind in the future.

By the way, I am a gun owner, and a proponent and defender of the Second Amendment.

    All the best to you,

    Steve Kelley
So, which one of you was it that copied my e-mail and sent it along? I won't post your name or e-mail address, you know who you are.
