Forgive me if you were just joking, but unless you are a really really good shot, really really lucky, or are fortunate enough to be attacked by a smaller bear, pepper spray can be the better option.

You know how dogs' sense of smell is many times more sensitive than humans? Bears' sense of smell is many times that of dogs. There was a segment on one of the Discovery channels about a pair of men attacked by a grizzly. The bear laid out one of the men and chased the second up a tree. He figured he was safe but watched in horror as the full grown grizzly started climbing. It knocked him out of the tree and it was only then that he realized that in his panic, he'd forgotten that he had bear spray. When the bear came down, he hit it with the spray. The bear stopped the attack in obvious agony and left.

A .357 round in the wrong place (and on a big bear like a grizzly, the "wrong place" is almost everywhere) isn't likely to be of much help. Spray isn't guaranteed to work, but it attacks the bear at its weak point.

    Yep!

    But so is the:

A {fill-in-the-blank} hunter was going hunting. Returned home before daylight. Spouse asked why. The {fill-in-the-blank} hunter responded that just before the last turn to the hunting site there was a new yellow sign along side the road, "Bear Left."

There have been some studies on bear pepper spray that has shown that use of the pepper spray resulted in about 50% fewer injuries to the hiker. Handguns seem to be pretty useless against them.
