Calm, cool Bigfork bartender collects weapon from man
Carpe degun.
A Bigfork bartender seized the gun in what was reported as a robbery attempt early Tuesday. And then he held the man until sheriff’s deputies arrived.
The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office said the incident was reported at 1:30 a.m. at the Tall Pine Lounge and Liquor Store. Arrested on suspicion of robbery was John Wilson, 43, of Bigfork. He was charged late Tuesday with assault with a weapon.
The bartender, John Beaubien, said a man entered the bar as Beaubien was preparing to close the business.
“He came in with a ski mask on and a gun his hand. He said, ‘This is a holdup,’” Beaubien said.
“When someone is pointing a gun at my head, I’m going to do what they want,” he said.
Beaubien said he went to the cash register and took out money.
“I want the money in the safe, too,” the man told Beaubien.
And then it happened.
“He sets the gun down on the bar.”
Beaubien said he had been pretty calm throughout the exchange and had briefly entertained, and rejected, the thought of wrestling the gun away.
He didn’t have to. He just picked it up off the bar instead.
The man had pulled his ski mask off and told Beaubien, “I was just joking. I was trying to teach you guys a lesson about what could happen.”
Beaubien said he decided, “I’m going to teach you a lesson, instead.”
With the unloaded, black .45-caliber semiautomatic gun in his hand, he called 911.
“I’ll sit here and wait for the cops,” the man told him.
Sheriff’s deputies were in the door within two minutes, he said.
They didn’t think the incident was a prank. Outside, idling in the parking lot, was Wilson’s vehicle. Wilson’s blood-alcohol level was reportedly more than twice the legal limit for driving.
Beaubien said he knows Wilson, who has previously been banned permanently from the bar.
Despite his composure at the time, Beaubien was rattled by the event.
“I couldn’t sleep last night,” he said Tuesday.
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.
