I think he was supposedly in some special police unit that was tasked with catching SpecOp types who'd gone bad.

These are some very good shoot 'em up kick butt type novels. I have read 2 so far and am reading "Nothing to Lose" right now.

If you are a fan of this type of novel I recommend these.

I can also recommend the Harry Bosch books by Michael Connely. Bosch is an LA Detective. Also great reads.
I like the Jack Reacher novels though I'm kind of ambivalent about the upcoming movie. I have trouble picturing Tom Cruise in the starring role...

Love Bosch and Reacher both. Also Spenser by Stephen Leather.

I've read all the Reacher novels and the short stories. page turners, every one of them. They are right on the edge of fantasy and all he needs is a cape and a hat with pointy ears to complete the picture. Or maybe a deerslayer hat and a meershcaum pipe...
    Good reads all.
I have another 38 days to serve in NY state then back to Florida - I'll download some of the other suggestions posted above. Thanks!

That has to be the biggest casting fiasco ever. Tom Cruise.....Reacher. Not even close.

I love those. Don't forget Connelly's Lincoln Lawyer novels, which are related to the Bosch ones (literally: Mickey Haller and Bosch have the same father, and collaborate in "The Confession" and "The Brass Verdict").

Another great series is John Sanford's "Prey" novels about Minnesota detective Lucas Davenport. Rich from his own software work, his work car is a Porsche.

Also good is Val McDermid, if you can decipher some obscure (to me at least) British slang. McDermid's most prominent hero is psychologist Tony Hill who works with police to find serial killers.

Me too. Cruise is an OK actor, but Reacher is 6 foot 5. Also the film treatment has Reacher tooling around in a muscle car, whereas the signature characteristic of the books is that Reacher owns nothing, certainly not a car.

Agree about Tom Cruise playing Reacher. Makes you wonder if the casting director actually read even one of the books or if the author had any influence. They'll have to hire very short people to play all the other parts and Cruise will have to really bulk up. I think Cruise was a horrible choice.

I like the books (have read the entire series); but wish Child would have some experts review and correct parts to make much more realistic.
