Good people of Georgia, talk to me...

I'll be passing through your fine state this summer, and I figure I'll be stopping for a night somewhere around Atlanta. I need to know where to stop... me and big cities dont get along. I'd prefer a nice suburb and nice hotel. A relatively safe area is a must, my kids will be with me. Any suggestions?

    Sixto,

Stay in Newnan, Georgia. Small city about 30 miles out
of downtown. They have several nice motels..stayed there
    many times.

There is also a great gun store there.

I've been through Newnan a number of times, as I have family there. So I'll give a +1 to Erik's suggestion. Haven't been to the gun store, though...

I stayed here..it was fairly new. They offer
    free cookies and coffee

I tried my best to find the gun store address online.
Newnan, has a large main strip..I know you turn
off next to a Walgreens, and it's on a side road..
next to a Yamaha dealership if I remember correctly.

They had a lot of guns. I looked at a Glock 36 there.

if you can make it to macon and/or forsyth on i75 you will find better places to stay. i would stay away from the atlanta area.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, but Atlanta works as far as time frame. My kids are small, so I need to have an A, B and C plan as far as stopping. The earliest I'd stop would be Dalton, but I'd prefer to get well south of Atlanta prior to stopping for the night. I dont want to get stuck in some ghetto dive because the kids had enough.
Dalton is about 6 hours from me, how far would that make Macon? For reference, I've gone from Cincinnati to Albany in about 10.5 hours, but that was when I was single and drove a cobra.

I'm not from Georgia, but I've stayed in the Homewood Suites in Alpharetta a few times and they have some great places to eat around there.

Places to hit if you're around Alpharetta(Northern suburbs outside Atlanta)...
    1. Pappadeaux - It was nice to have this right up the hill from the hotel.
    2. Atlantic Seafood Company
    3. There's also a good steakhouse right across the road from the hotel too. But I can't remember the name of that place so it must not be as good as I remember it.
    4. If you're into a nice meal with a live jazz band and one really odd atmosphere one evening with the wife and chocolate fondue is her thing...there's a nice little place called Dante's Down the Hatch in Atlanta. Oh yeah if you stop there...the crocks in the water and around the warf IN THE RESTAURANT are real It's the strangest thing. The whole interior of the place is like 3 stories and it's built like an old style warf and shipping harbor. You can actually eat in private cabins in the ship and the jazz band plays on the deck.
    5. There's a nice little Italian place around alpharetta somewhere too, but I can't remember the dang name...I'm sure someone at whatever hotel you stop at would know. It's a little place...not a big chain type feel.

Newnan is off Interstate 85, approximately 30 minutes south of downtown Atlanta. I would also recommend that area for a nights stay.

Dalton, is not so nice. It's the carpet capital of Georgia,
and I was always scratching my eyes and rubbing my
    nose there..lol

Newnan, has a small town feel to it..very safe but lots
of resturants and shopping for a small area.

I have been all over Atlanta, and there are some places
I wouldn't want to be at night. I went with some friends
to tour Turner field stadium at night. I can't remember
    how many hoods I saw

I had my girlfriend with me and she wanted to stop
at this convenience store...it had about 15 guys hanging
out in front..told her I think we should pass on this one

OK, Newnan is a little out of my way... How about Macon or Forsyth? Can anybody tell me about those?
