Irish Wolfhounds
Last summer I started a thread about losing one of our two dogs in a freak accident.
We still have our Rhodesian Ridgeback, but we lost our Golden Retriever...it was not a great summer's evening.
In fact, quite a few of you shared many words of kindness and understanding...thanks.
Well we have decided to get another canine to add to the family.
It usually takes time, but after lots of reading and research, we have agreed on an Irish Wolfhound.
We almost bought one 6 years ago, but decided upon our Rhodesian Ridgeback instead, and he's proven to be a faithful companion, even if it is a battle with him...trying to find a comfortable spot on a kingsize bed.
Well, the idea of an Irish Wolfhound has now developed into a reality and the search now starts.
We've read
a lot and have made some contacts
.
With so many members here, I thought perhaps someone may have some words of wisdom, or possibly even have IW's and be willing to share info about them.
Any and all info would be appreciated.
(I visited most IW sites already...
...looking for more personal info.)

They seem to be cool dogs. The only downside is their short life expectancy of around 6 years. It would be hard to get attached to a pet to loose it in only 6 years, I wouldn't be able to handle that.

Would the FL heat be too much for them ?. I remember when I was a Kid in Ireland there was one at the local hotel named Patrick. He would go for a walk around town or hang out at the hotel. He was a cool peaceful dog.

I'm not sure, our Rhodesian doesn't seem to mind the heat, because he's usually in the A/C while sleeping on our kingsize bed...
(He's not always on our bed, sometimes he is at his food bowl, but still in the A/C.

Are you talking about this puppy?
You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

One thing you might want to consider is how your Ridgeback interacts with other dogs. He's been king dog for about a year now and may resent an "intruder". Not saying he will but it is a possibility, and with 2 dogs of that size I don't think I'd want to get between them if they decide to fight it out for top dog status. Not to mention space in the bed!
You might talk with Bunny, she works with animal rescue organizations and might have some insight to Wolfhounds.

Where's the saddle?
I'd hate to pay that feed bill.
Even worse: I'd hate to be the one to clean up all the poo.
Sometimes on a clear day, I can see into the future with this spotting scope.

When you finally get one, be sure to post a pic.
They are one of the most faithful and loyal breed.
We have a guy that lives a few blocks over and he is wheelchair locked. He has an one that he walks every day. I don't think any one will mess with him while his dog is around.

When I was very yough, appx 5, I marched every St. Patrick's day in the NY city parade between two of them. The were very gentle and good around children. Brings back fond memories!

Be hard for me not to get another Rhody , even if they tend to be a little hard headed .
Give yours an ear scratching for me.
