With regard to why they stole the power, I don't know what the deal is in the states, but aside from IR cameras on choppers, a drain on the power grid, rates paid or not, is about the biggest cause of investigation into cannabis cultivation.

Although not on the same scale, some bikies (or as they are referred to in America, bikers) in my state spent alot of money on giving one of their members a very big concrete patio, including a large barbecue with a roof, in the backyard. Very generous except for the fact that the patio actually went about 12 feet down and contained an amphetamine laboratory. The solid brick bbq was the hidden entrance, lifted by a hydraulic pump.

Actually, they have to use high wattage heat lamps to grow the mary jane plants. However, since the house was empty, why not put a couple of diesel generators in there? Sufficiently muffled, nobody would have heard them.
