    Lost out on another job

Didn't even get an interview for this one. Just how competitive is the job market in my area of Michigan? I have 10 years experience, an Associate's Degree and a Journeyman's card, and didn't even get an interview. Just a letter in the mail saying someone else that better fit what the company was looking for was hired. One of my references works at the company and has been there in good standing for 18 years. Oh, well. I get to continue to go to school full time through a government program that is paying for it all to retrain me in Criminal Justice.

Keep looking. There are jobs, but they are few and far in between. Keep your head up, and something will come along.

Whoever was in charge of the hiring decision in that spot might have already had made up their mind for who they wanted to hire - but had to go through the motions of looking at others just to keep appearance of being legit in following company proceedures for hiring..??

I might not should post this - could be entirely wrong in what I said - no way to really know if this is the case or not - just a thought......

Sorry to hear that. A lot of getting a job is who, not what ,you know. Stay in school, you'll be better off in the long run anyway.

Job market is in the pits all around. Fortunately, I'm working (for now), but my wife has been on the hunt for the last 6 months. Overqualified, willing to take a considerable pay cut compared to her prior job. Nothing but courtesy e-mails and voicemails saying the positions have been filled. Frustrating to say the least. I can only hope for all of us that this is rockbottom and can only get better from here.....Good luck.

This is the case in many situation. I think in this economy despite being qualified for the position there are many people out there that have my education but also have 2-3x more experience. Also Lomac chemical company went out of business about 10 years ago, maybe some of their mechanics that were hired elsewhere put in on this job because Sun bought their old building, are running some of their old equipment, and it is a Union shop. I really want to finish this degree anyhow.

I don't know what it is that you do but it sounds technical in nature, so I have a suggestion for you.

I was encountering the same problem ,that is why I am sitting in Camp Ramadi Iraq right now. I know there are job openings in many fields with pay being north of 6 figures. Down side is you will be away from home for a year; with generous vacation accumulation you can go home for several weeks about mid tour or, the wife and I are going to meet for a 14 day Mediterranean cruise. Things are really pretty quiet here now, there hasnít been a mortar attack in months, and Iíve been here 6 weeks now and have only heard 2 gun fights outside the wire, monotony is the major enemy now.

Let me know if you are interested, I am working for ITT Systems Div, but I can easily get you contact info for KBR, General Dynamics, Raytheon etc.

Chains, can you relocate to another state?

If so, you might broaden your search outside of the Michigan area.

I can understand where you are coming from.

Back in April I was offered a position with a Satellite Comms company in Northern VA. However, shortly after I was offered the position Gates announced the new defense budget and they cut a major contract that the company worked out of the budget. That meant they had to put a freeze on hiring to reshuffle the engineers on that project onto other projects.

Just stay persistent in your search. After that I probably sent in 50-60 applications to different employers. I finally got a hit about a week before I graduated and was offered a position in Charleston. I lucked out and was able to get a position that won't be going anywhere in this economy (government engineer), and I get to stay in Charleston.

I hope your search goes well and you find the same luck I did.

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, jobs are really tough to come by. I went on an interview recently, the job went into the paper on Sunday, and I interviewed on Tuesday. They already had 20 applicants! And they say that medicine is resession proof. NOT!

I appreciate the information but with a 3 month old daughter I wouldn't be able to leave my family. Basically what my paperwork says is that I am trained to install, maintain, and repair industrial machinery. Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, etc.
