    Living in La La land

See below our police comissioners comments in regards to a police shooting that happened a while back and the topic of arming our police was raised again by the media.

This just proves our police heirachy are living in la la land. Its just plain funny and scary at the same time.

I have no doubt that carrying handguns would compromise officers' ability to do their regular work, because when you carry a weapon, your primary concern is to protect that weapon. If this was balanced by a clearly demonstrable increase in personal protection, it would be a price to consider paying. But the protection offered by a firearm - particularly a pistol - is more illusory than real.

The firearms offenders we encounter most in New Zealand are toting hunting rifles, shot guns or cut-down versions of these. A pistol is no match for that sort of fire power. It must be drawn from a holster and sighted before it's fired - precious milliseconds which can be better spent diving for cover.
    a) he obviously hasnt heard of a retention holster
    b) so pepper spray, hands and baton = protection and pistol doesnt ?
    c) Glock 17 with 17 rounds of 9mm doesnt = firepower ???
    d) diving for cover in milliseconds ??
    e) high power rifle vs what cover ?? sand bags ?? steel plated wall ?

Honestly this is just plain disturbing

So is he advocating taking his officers' pistols away or giving them rifles?

Neither, they dont have pistols currently, pepper spray, baton, thats it.

Funny to he uses the example that he can recall 1 instance in his career where a firearm saved an officers life and 2 where they were beaten to death with their own baton.

???? what the hell sort of comparison is that ????

Seriously someone in our government here needs to review the idiots that are running our police force. This sort of thinking shouldnt be allowed or expressed publicly.

There is also the argument that returning fire whilst finding cover might give an officer valuable seconds to find appropriate cover or make themselves safe.

A criminal with a rifle who knows officer is unarmed and is willing to fire is just going to keep on coming until said officer is dead.

It happened in this case where the criminals chased down the 2 officers and shot them (one dead) before armed backup arrived.

How about moving to cover_rapidly_and firing at the same time! Wow!

It is sad when things get to the point at which, if a nutcase is walking around shooting people, the police are supposed to be running away. The image of an active shooter commiting murder while police officers are sprinting away from him in every direction is not a pleasant one.

Being armed gives you options. Just because you have a pistol doesn't mean you have to draw before seeking out cover...in fact, against hunting rifle fire I'd say it would be really stupid to draw first.

    <facepalm>

It's amazing what people get put in charge of protecting people...

How can the police be expected to serve the public when they can't even defend themselves?

    It's mind boggling really...

The BG has a rifle/shotgun(long distance offence weapon), the police have pepper spray/batton(short range defence weapon). The police commisioner can't see the imbalance???

Why waste words on a statement from this idiot. The police comissioner is living in his own little world.

What pray tell happens 5 seconds later?

"precious milliseconds which can be better spent diving for cover."

    I am truly speechless....

Probably more like..." remember if you are confronted by an armed criminal dive for cover and hope the assailant will use up his ammo and aggression killing citizens, then you can pepper spray him, and bring him here for dinner and tv and some sympathy for what society has turned him into."
