As an additional thought to this thread, (and not TOO far off topic), while stationed at Ft Bliss TX in 99-01, I was the Brigade Chaplain for an ADA (Patriot) BDE. We were having a multi-national Air Defense exercise and I got into a discussion with a group of mixed US and European allies--interestingly, all these guys had recent experience as Drills in their own country's equivalent of Basic Training.

I found it absolutley fascinating that as each guy talked about their experiences with own recent trainees, it did not matter which country they came from, they were all seeing the same kinds of trends in the young people, issues like the inability to follow orders, to defy autority, the inability to handle stress, both physical and emotional. Each one of these soldiers, from both sides of the ocean were deeply concerned about the quality of their own military based on what they were seeing in the trainees..............kinda makes you worry when you see the same pattern across the globe.

Our elders said the same thing about us. Too bad they were right.

Until somebody actually shows me this "stress card", I will consider it to be . So all you jarheards start photoshopping.

We haven't touched on the comedy of camouflage for the Air Force yet have we?

At least we got the smurf suit killed. The current ABU (Approved for Boardroom Use) uniform actually looks very similar to the Army's ACU from a distance.

Here's the part I never understood. When the AF was actually looking at the smurf suit, they said that having a separate identity was more important than camoflague. Their response was, "well 97% of the AF never leaves the garrison. Why do they need it?" What about the other 3%??? Obviously, the second number is much higher now.

I always wondered why we didn't bother to camoflague the flight suits. When we do survival training, the pickle doesn't camo that well. It can be done, but I have the best luck burrowing in where the big, thorby bushes are. It deters pursuers.

Now, if we want to poke fun at utility uniforms, have you seen the new Navy work uniform? It looks like somebody barfed on a Coastie utility uniform.

This whole thing is a little nostalgic and funny as well. But a few things remain, and I pray to God never change.

    1) The sense of Patriotism
    2) The misty eyes at the sound of the National Anthem and the sight of the Flag being raised and lowered.
    3) The willingness to risk it all for God and County.

We all need to remember that bullets are still just as deadly as they were when "we" were young. Our young men and women still bleed and die the same as they did when "we" were young. The pride in a job well done is still the same as they were when "we" were young.

I went through Navy Basic in 1966, and I am no longer young. Kinda funny, the older I get the better I was.
