    Hands down the coolest thing I have seen in years...

    From an email I got yesterday...

    This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa.

    Amazingly, 97% of the machines components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft, Iowa ..............farm equipment!

    It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment calibration, and tuning before filming this video but as you can see it was WELL worth the effort. It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the
    University, and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.

    Well, that sucks... I'm usually pretty good at spotting CGI...

    If I recall correctly, we watched this in class when I was studying computer animation back in 2000. This was featured as an illustration of automated Dynamics in Maya (3D software).

    You can set the properties of an object and the surfaces it will be striking (hardness, resilience, overall gravity of the scene, object weight, etc., etc.) and the software extrapolates how the object would react in real time based on the properties you assigned. It can also randomize the behavior of the object so that you have a variety of outcomes and you can render out the one you like.

    Mind you, this was nine years ago and Maya was (and is) a very high-end product. I can only imagine how far the software has come since then.

    it is cool, but to me, the way the camera moves shows it's CGI.

    I cannot believe that not one of you have seen this incredible animation on PBS??

    It is absolutely amazing to watch and there is an hour or more of these.
