    Whats wrong with our country?

boston a family picked up by a taxi at the airport left a sleeping 5-year-old child behind in the back of the minivan and the cabbie almost took the blame for it.

Joseph cohen, a taxi driver for 39 years, picked up the family at logan international airport on sunday, drove them to their home in the city's mattapan neighborhood, and helped them unload their luggage.

"they paid me, thank you very much, everything was nice, and i left," he said.

Minutes later, cohen got a call from the cab pool at the airport. State police, who have jurisdiction over logan, were looking for him.

He was told the family left a child in his cab.

"i said, 'what?' so i looked in the back and i see the baby sleeping. I said, 'what should i do?' so you know, i take the baby (back) to the family," he said. "the father came out. He was very happy."

he even gave him a $50 tip.

The following day, cohen was ordered to report to the hackney unit, where police told him his license was being suspended for three days because he didn't do a thorough check of the van. He appealed the suspension and was allowed to keep his license pending a hearing. On tuesday, he visited the police station with an attorney and learned he would only get a warning.

"we are very happy that the baby was safely returned to mom and dad," said elaine driscoll, a police spokeswoman. "that said, it was an important opportunity to remind cab drivers why we have a rule that dictates they must check the back of their cab after every fare."

cohen said the girl had been in the back of the van behind another seat and he could not see her from his rearview mirror or from the outside of the vehicle.

The cabbies' union expressed outrage at the proposed suspension, saying the fault should lie with the child's family, not the driver.

Police would not release the names of the parents but said they were not being investigated.

"i think the sad piece here is that the police are not recognizing the responsibility of the adults and are now saying this driver also has to be responsible for passengers who forget their children," said donna blythe-shaw, a staff representative for the united steelworkers boston taxi drivers association.
when you blame a cab driver because you forgot your 5 year old that was sleeping in the cab,and then the cops want to blame you.outrageous

It sounds like they have a rule about doing "a thorough check of the van" before departing after dropping off a fair. This is probably why they have such a rule. I don't see where he, the cabbie, is blameless. It is ultimately the parents responsibility but it's his cab and he has to obey the rules too.

    Agreed...misplaced blame big time.
How does a person muchless a family be so harried and tired that they completely _forget_ a child.

I do not understand this yet it seems to happen often per monthly news reports.

Sure, he should have checked...but THEY FORGOT THEIR CHILD. It's not like they left a handbag, or a coat. It was a child!!!

I agree the family is whacked for leaving their child behind but I don't see where they "blamed" the driver. It appeared they called the cops to get the cab company contacted. Only speculation but I extracted the piece from the article below where I only see they contacted the po po and the family as having left the child per the cab pool dispatcher.

Minutes later, cohen got a call from the cab pool at the airport. State police, who have jurisdiction over logan, were looking for him.

He was told the family left a child in his cab.

ANOTHER CASE OF.....I know it's my fault, but why do I have to take the blame....those parents should pay a bit more attention.....

You cannot expect the driver to check the van out every time he drops people off,... That is crazy,.. I totally i the parent's responsibility,.. The cab company puts that claus in there to cover there butt,... Sorta like company's put in the handbook... "Foul language isn't to be tolerated and can result in a termination".... Ya, like anyone has been fired for cussing,.. I'd be the only person working at my place of employment for that.. OR,.. They always have in there "Personal usage of phone/computers can result in termination" Now, is there anyone that wouldn't be guilty of either of those???

Ummmmmm..... Ya didn't see nothing, cannot prove anything...

Agreed,... It would be a lonely place, I don't have time after work to get online and only get online when things are slow,.. There is talk about blocking internet access at work, and that would mess with not only company work I have to do, but also make the day REALLY long... I would have to get some good books and then worry about falling asleep at my desk..

    Here's what burned me:

"The cabbies' union expressed outrage at the proposed suspension, saying the fault should lie with the child's family, not the driver.

"Police would not release the names of the parents but said they were not being investigated."

Yep, these are the same types of parents who forget to drop the baby off at child care and leave it in the hot car at work.
