What's with the "chase cars" behind the plane on takeoff...?
"Who is to say that I am not an instrument of karma? Indeed, who is to say that I am not the very hand of God himself, dispatched by the Almighty to smite the Philistines and hypocrites, to lay low the dishonest and corrupt, and to bust the jawbone of some jackass that so desperately deserves it?"
James May from TopGear.... Not sure if you get that on BBC World Service.

Indeed a "Ride of a Lifetime".
My "Ride of a Lifetime" was a cruse abord the USS Antedium when I was a kid. Visited everywhere from the brig to the Captains quarters.

The "news media" has ceased being the watch dog of the people and has become the apologist for an irresponsible government.
Wow! Not many get to do that...![]()

I'm not a U2 pilot, but I've flown with a few guys who have flown 'em. I've never asked specifically, but I'm pretty sure it's to help the pilot judge height on landing. From what I'm told, it's tough to see just how high above touchdown you are in the Dragonlady. Another pilot uses a radio while he's screaming down the runway in a car to give the other dude accurate data on touchdown.
And yes, you are correct on landing. the pilot can't see the ground when they get close so the chase car calls out altitude.
In the late 89's they used El Camino's. In the 90's, they used mustangs. The speed wasn't really needed but since it was a pilot who drove in the car, well, we all know how they can be.
