The trick is to let the cat think he has a chance to escape, all the while blocking off other exits.
When he gets to the point of escaping, block him off so he has to find an alternate route.

Well, its 36 hours later... but now I can routinely trap it 10 or more times in a row. When I went to sleep last night, I couldn't get the dots out of my head.
