Update: Gas Pipeline Explosion
You could hear the blast and see the flames miles away, after a gas pipeline exploded just outside Appomattox early Sunday morning. The good news is no one was killed in that blast, but we're told five people suffered minor injuries.
Zeke Zavatsky, Lives Close to Explosion - "It sounded like a jet plane crashing, I don't know, it just went off, it was crazy."
Officials tell us this was a major gas pipeline that runs from the Gulf of Mexico up to New York City that ruptured and ignited. Many of you grabbed your cameras just after the explosion, which happened around 8:00am.
As far as we know only two nearby houses were destroyed at the site near Kelly Creek off Oakville Road. Dozens of residents had to leave their homes as fire crews came in. Responders had the fire contained by 9:00. There was 50-foot crater left behind. Dozens of emergency workers were still on the scene Sunday evening.
It really is amazing nobody got killed, especially when two homes were destroyed. We were in a staging area just a short distance away from where the pipe burst and left a hole in the ground. And we're told more people are on the way to try and figure out what happened.
