Ever since I broke my leg, back in September, we have been trying to determine why such a minor fall should have resulted in such a bad break. Labs from when I was in the hospital last week confirm that my kidneys are failing. The transplant center called, today, and told me I'm officially on the waiting list and should consider myself on-call. I have resigned my slot on the CTR team, and they are putting me in a support role.
A living donor is preferred, of course. I can take a donor with a blood type of A or O, with best results likely from someone who is A+. My insurance covers all associated costs for the donor, which is good. So far, I have one prospective donor.
If I have to wait for a cadaveric transplant, then I'm looking at an average wait of 3-5 years, with several false alarms. A kidney becomes available for someone in my age group and blood type every 17 days on average, or so they tell me.
I didn't want to say anything until I had something concrete. It's official, so I'm telling you all. Your positive thoughts will be appreciated. I think I'm going to go shooting, this afternoon.
