Ever since I broke my leg, back in September, we have been trying to determine why such a minor fall should have resulted in such a bad break. Labs from when I was in the hospital last week confirm that my kidneys are failing. The transplant center called, today, and told me I'm officially on the waiting list and should consider myself on-call. I have resigned my slot on the CTR team, and they are putting me in a support role.
A living donor is preferred, of course. I can take a donor with a blood type of A or O, with best results likely from someone who is A+. My insurance covers all associated costs for the donor, which is good. So far, I have one prospective donor.
If I have to wait for a cadaveric transplant, then I'm looking at an average wait of 3-5 years, with several false alarms. A kidney becomes available for someone in my age group and blood type every 17 days on average, or so they tell me.
I didn't want to say anything until I had something concrete. It's official, so I'm telling you all. Your positive thoughts will be appreciated. I think I'm going to go shooting, this afternoon.
Best of luck,

Wow, glad they caught it this soon. Your broken leg may have saved your life! They say (and I believe) that God does things so that good things will happen. Even if those things are painful (like breaking a leg).
I am Type A I believe but I don't know how much harm that I've done to my kidneys (drinking, the shots that the military have given me, etc..). I can't even give blood to the Red Cross so I don't know if I could even be okayed to give a kidney.
All the best for you and hopefully your kidney will be on it's way soon :).
Best of luck. You will be in our prayers.

Sucks that you need a transplant but good that they caught it early. Hope they get you fixed up soon.
Tom...Sorry to hear about your medical problem.
A good reminder for folks to choose to become an organ donor.
If anything catastrophic ever happens to me then hopefully some of my (no longer needed) parts can be used to help another person.

Yes, please. If you haven't become a donor, please consider giving someone else the gift of life by becoming one. It is amazing how many lives you can affect.Originally Posted by QKShooter

Best of luck to you , one of my Law enforcement mentors had to get a kidney some years ago , he has passed now but it did extend his life 12 to 15 years even back then. Rest assured our thoughts and prayers will be with you and yours.
My prayers to you too!

Good luck with the list, and stay well - you'll need your strength and health.

"He went on two legs, wore clothes and was a human being, but nevertheless he was in reality a wolf of the Steppes. He had learned a good deal . . . and was a fairly clever fellow. What he had not learned, however, was this: to find contentment in himself and his own life. The cause of this apparently was that at the bottom of his heart he knew all the time (or thought he knew) that he was in reality not a man, but a wolf of the Steppes."
Best of luck Tom.
It takes a college degree to break'em;
and a high school education to fix'em!
Tom, best of luck to you. Everything will work out for the best.
I just renewed my D.L. yesterday and got on the donor list again. I have been for some time but I guess they continue to ask in case you have had a change of heart or something.
Train and train hard, you might not get a second chance to make a first impression!
