LOWER MANHATTAN (WABC) -- The sidewalk became a dangerous place to be for a man in Lower Manhattan on Saturday. He fell 30 feet through a grate in the sidewalk.

Witnesses say the man left an Off Track Betting building to go smoke a cigarette when all of a sudden they heard screaming and saw a cloud of dust.

Freddie Choo was grabbing a smoke before his next food delivery when he says the man fell through the grate, busted through the floor below, and then landed about 30 feet down.

It's Gonna Be A GRATE Day!

Didja hear that one news story? I think it was on the news in Denmark? (not sure)...
Since most of the accidents happen to pedestrians while they are walking...they want folks to wear Walking Helmets....all day.
The one that you wear when you are riding your bicycle would be a suitable type of helmet.

When you get off your bicycle...Just Leave Your Helmet ON & wear it all day.

Don't take it off! Leave it ON!

Could I make that up? I kid you not I heard it as a news story on the radio.

It was late at night though and I did not hear exactly what country since it was difficult for me to hear the radio through my Nighttime Sleeping Helmet. <~~~

Anyway...this guy could have actually benefited by wearing a walking helmet.

Sounds like the fellow is still in grate shape after the accident, lucky for him the ground 30' below broke his fall.

Sounds typical for NYC. I was there working for a rescue agency after 911. The streets were a total mess. Obviously the street department digs the holes, then covers them with steel plates, and forget them. There were steel plates all over the place, to stumble over in the dark. A real mess!!
They've had 8 years to straighten it up, but I imagine the same ones that we tripped over then, people are still tripping over, today.

What a bunch of total ingrates you are.

Actually...he is quite lucky that he survived falling 30' - he could have easily become one of the grateful dead.

I read this story this morning and it said he was smoking a cigar. My second thought was, "What happened to the cigar?". I know if he was smoking a nice Arturo Fuente, that's what he was looking for in the bottom of the hole...before he reached for his cell phone.
