If you go, you should take a trip to Tikal....the mother of Mayan ruins. It's breathtaking.

Besides relaxed gun laws, Americans can invest funds in Guatemala....it's one of the last countries that do not cooperate with American banking secrecy laws. The Guatemalan government does not get along with our government and will probably never succumb.

I did an across the country tour of Costa Rica. We were on a riverboat and the Captain informed us that we were turning around because the border of Guatemala was coming up. I talked to him and he said they couldn't assure our safety because of pirates and gangs.

Perhaps you meant to say "Nicaraugua"?

    Perhaps one could.

"Should" one do so is really the question, though. The hesitation to that one is all the answer one needs.

Imagine trying to explain it to someone who doesn't believe in your need or justifiability. It's hard enough here. I can only imagine how tough it could get if you run up against the wrong sort there, on a bad day. That's not even counting the criminal element.

I can think of a number of things I'd rather do.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
    Thoughts: Justifiable self defense (A.O.J.).
Explain: How does disarming victims reduce the number of victims?

I have a medic friend of mine who volunteers for a relief agency called Paramedics for Children. They primarily do work in Honduras as they have their main base there. She goes about 2 or 3 times a year but has been over into Guatemala a few times.

She really likes going to Honduras. She usually fly's I think, but I know a couple of times when they bring supplies they drive straight through from the States. All the way through Mexico and clear across Guatemala. I thought she was INSANE for doing that. That's a lot of exposure in unfriendly territory for me. They probably go through Belize to minimize time in Guatemala though because she has said it was a lot more dangerous than Honduras.

I've seen lots of pictures from her trips.

Looks pretty cool, but I think my 3rd World travel days are about over with these days.

BTW... they may let you carry your gun in Guatemala, but try shooting someone down there! Anyone want to deal with their criminal courts down there? NOT ME! Anyone want to bet that the gringo don't get to go home afterward?

I absolutely love Guatemala. My Salvadoran padrino lives in Guatemala. I hope to go back soon.
The preceding post may contain sarcasm; it's just better that way. However, it is still intended with construction and with the Love of my L-rd Y'shua.

The advice I read was if you shoot someone, just walk away. Witnesses will tell the policia it was a robbery, etc. and there will be no investigation. Hanging around is not a smart idea.

Not me... Mr. Murphy is my co-pilot... I'd be the one dude in the last 50 years who got gigged for shooting someone!
