I have two large tube socks that are filled 3/4 of the way up with rice.
Pop them in the microwave for a few minuets and apply to your back.
It give a moist heat and stays hot for a long time and it really helps my back.

I have three collapsed disks and two that herniated so Here is the list...
    Loose weight...
    improve your posture...
sit in chairs with good back support...
get a good mattress to sleep on at night...
take anti inflammatory such as Mortin...
do setups and build the muscles that support the back...
lots of fluids and fruits eat lots of watermellon...
and get an inversion table to hang from.
    Worked for me....

I used to have a similar issue. Get some exercised to do from your doctor. I haven't been on the couch for a week because of it in the past 2 years.

    Golf helped too, I'm sure

    All of the above, +1

Really, it's all good advice, it just may or may not work for you. I have had chronic pain off and on for 40 years. Have used all of the above at various times, except Oxy.

A good Doctor may or may not help.

    Good luck.

Ever looked into acupuncture? I have no personal experience, but have close friends and one family member that swear by it.

Me personally, It helps me lot to sleep on a firm mattress. When I sleep on a pillow-top or "sink into" mattress, I wake up with significant back pain. Also stretching after a warm shower helps me.

A visit to the local strip club will work, It's guaranteed to take your mind off your back problems as long as the wallet holds out.

Ok here is some serious meds, Feldene, Indocin and Soma. Expensive but worked for me. I had 2 so called doctors, MANY misdiagnosis, they wanted to cut me open. For
exploratory sugery. I had severe back pain, I couldn't even drive my car. The doc's thought I might have kidney failure.

I said screw that and went to see a back specialist. He wrote a perscription for me of, Feldene, Indocin and Soma. I was 100% in a couple of days.

Lay down like this for ten minutes a night to let it relax http://www.massageohiovalley.com/bac_static.jpg

Go to a shoe store that specifically sells running shoes. They should be able to analyze your gait and fit you to a shoe. Footwear is huge! Helped solve my back pain issues about a month ago.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but try sleeping with a pillow under your lower back. It helps me. This also helps, grab the top edge of a door and hang for a minute or so. Stretching those muscles helps.

A few years back I noticed that doing chin ups on a machine that took part of my weight helped a great deal. I think it was the "hanging" that made a tad of space between the vertebrae.

Strengthening the lower back is good for everyone. Exercises to reduce low back pain
Also, use proper lifting techniques. When all else fails, I use the 800 mg of Ibuprofen. I just make sure I take it with a belly full of food.
